Astran / Middle East Drivers

Browsing through the English Macks thread I couldnt help notice this fella…

Who seriously reminded me of this fella…

Given that both Thor and OHS went to places far flung, hot and sandy, do you think its the same chap■■?

Any of you ex M/E hands from back in the day recognise him and around when would the pics have been taken??

I guess alot of regular M/E drivers hopped from company to company so it could well be the same fella.

Hi Bullitt.I may be wrong[if i am no doubt someone will castigate me in short order] but i would think that it must be mid to late 70s.If the grill is correct and that is a volvo 290,didn’t they come out after 75  ,and i think that it was mid to late 70s before OHS had any English guys working for them[waiting to be bollocked  ]Mike

I rekon it is the same guy,it looks like the same driver without the shades on but same beard ,in this OHS truck also

the Thor transport driver is a good mate of mine named phil bunch aka bunchy and he didn’t drive for OHS at any time when he worked on the middle east job. im 99% sure he only worked for Thor & Morgan overland .

could be same chap just not his truck?

Cheers FF, would you say it`s your mate next the OHS truck though?

Maybe Sherlock Ash could solve the mystery!!

EDIT…sorry Ff, just saw your reply in the Macks thread. Not the same driver then!!

Scary likeness though, especially doing the same run, that could make for interesting times!! :open_mouth:

That was the 70s lorry driver look Bullitt, more commonly known now as the ‘Peter Sutcliffe’ in fact if he hadn’t taken up disembowlling slappers, many lorry drivers would still be rocking that look today

The mention of OHS raised a memory, I recall an incident at Dover round the 80’s (?) when the Ministry and Police were targeting the Turk drivers on OHS for driving UK registered trucks on a Turk driving licenses, I don’t know the outcome of the investigation and I didn’t hear anymore about it, Anyone recall this incident ■■ - - I had a mate on for OHS namely Micky Gordon
who in later years drove for Concorde - Any memories out there ■■ Fred

Ain’t growing up awfull?
This is Phil Bunch,(Bunchy),on the right, with me,centre,30 odd years later, taken at the last reunion a couple of years ago.
The only bloke who hasn’t changed much in all this time is Kenny Hawkesworth, left.

What was the reunion Ian ? ?

Hi Fred, dont quote me on this as its what I heard OHS as in Sutti Trans was forced to give up his Turk Drivers ,but the crafty old bugger had his trucks picked up by Uk Drivers in Dover tipped and loaded then returned to dover put on ferry and picked up my the good old Turk waiting on the otherside, dont blame him for this as most of his Turk drivers had worked for him a long time ,he also had a couple of English drivers ,one most drivers will remember was Alan Brown ,who had Black satin sheets in his cab and was nicked named the ■■■ Machine, last time I saw him was when the Turkish borders were shut in Late 79/80 cant remember which ,we were stuck at the Syrian border going into Turkey but we all took the ferry from Latkia to volos in greece and borders opened the next day after we sailed ,sods law that was ,what made me think of that was in the parking waiting for the ferry were a number of Danes and Finns ,a dog had given birth to a litters of pups in the carpark and the Danes were feeding them as a Syrian had ran over the mother and killed it ,the pups were picked up and split between the drivers who took them home ,I bumped into one of the Danes 8 months later and he showed me a picture of two of the dogs they looked great, happy ending this time not always like this,

Roger
