I am trying to trace Alan Woods, does anyone know where he is.
Dave.
Hi Red, I must of got my wires crossed that might be the one that I was thinking of.
I have just been talking to Dave Mackie and I mentioned to him if he can remember sometime in the late seventies when there was a major earthquake somewhere in Southern Turkey. I once met a driver who told me I.I.R.C. four British trucks were taking Red Cross supplies, tents, blankets, etc down to the area and when they crossed The Bospherous Bridge they refused to pay the bridge toll, which wasn’t cheap. As they had been going day and night to get down there as fast as they could they were due some sleep anyway. The Police who were stationed on the bridge came over to sort it out and the drivers said that they were not going anywhere. (Brave or silly, make your own mind up ).
Eventually a high ranking police officer got involved and said that they didn’t have to pay the toll and thanked them for the loads that they were carrying.
Now does anybody on here remember a story like this that was going around at the time.
Regards Steve.
Hi Gerry Mac
Back to Tobruck to go on an LCT back to Cyprus I was stationed at 48 command workshops R.E.M.E. next to the Nurses Barracks ,Yippie,My Main stint in Lybia was with 16 Para R.E.M.E attached to 5 Tank Regiment ,repairing the Engines they messed up when they played with the Govener’s to give them more speed ,wish I had one of them engines now ,was the same V24 Rolls Merlin as fitted to the Spitfire ,the squad I was with at the Time held the record for the Engine change in the Desert using the lift on a Halftrack 11.hrs ,who were u with at that time The R.A.F and Air .Corps were in El Adem
5 Tanks and Irish Rifles were at Derna ,I was about 200klm in the Desert between the two at Camp Fort Fridgedair,as we called it You may have heard of it ,Hot, dusty and orrible appart from the Mess Tent and Cold beer and loads of Fridges to keep the food fresh hense the name of the camp Fort Fridgedair,I was shipped back to Cyprus as I was the only 1st class electic boffin ,I then got shot in Famagusta by a spiper and the bullit came through the wind screen of the Scammell I was in and it went through my leg into the seat missing the meat and two veg by an inch ,it nackered my legg on healing and was given a Med discharg such a shame as I was in for the duration.

Roger, I don’t doubt it was a ‘typo’ but the Merlin was a V12 with two spark plugs per cylinder each powered by different magneto’s, as I understand it, the main difference between the aero & tank versions was the aero versions were supercharged?

When you are in writing mode, click upload attachment and then click browse, find the photo on your hard drive and then you can click add file.
Or you can use a photohosting site like tinypic or photobucket and use a link like this 1mg[http.pjkjrmse45682.jpg]/1mg
Mushroomman, maybe it was the angle at which the photos were taken but the car transporter and the blue and white box trailer look considerably longer than 13.6 mtrs.
