Why did the Bulgarians only want US Dollars and not DM? I never understood that, as the DM was gold plated at the time

You should of asked her at the time Malc, did you try a jar of coffee  .

Not those Bulgarians, they were quite happy with a pair of used Wrangler or Levi jeans :stuck_out_tongue:

I remember having to pay an agent and the wheel wash in Dollars

Who knows Malc  , my first thoughts were that The Wombles wanted the $$$s so that they could pay The Arabs for oil but it was more than likely that they got their oil from Rumania or off Uncle Ivan. Maybe they had an agreement with Phillip Morris which said that they could only pay with Yankee Dollars for the millions of Marlboro that they smoked.
You have just remided me now  , I once loaded in Bucharest with loads of cardboard cartons which were full of leather goods, boots, belts, watch straps, rolls of leather etc. The customer in England was British Leyland and I was a bit puzzled as to why Leylands would want a load of leather boots. As it was a Friday evening I made my way to The Brit Inn in Bucharest (who can remember going there for a pint of Guinness and a packet of Smiths crisps  ) which was at The British Embassy.
One of the staff there explained to me that what often happened was that if say The Bucharest Bus Company, (which was State owned) wanted to buy British goods, engines or parts and they didn’t have enough hard currency like Pounds or Dollars they would pay half in hard currency. To make up the rest of the money Rumania would export things like mens suits to Burtons The Tailors in Leeds where we delivered loads of hanging garments over the years. Burtons would then sell the suits obviously for pounds cash and pay the rest of the money which was owed to British Leyland. The Bucharest Bus Company would then pay the company who made the suits, (which was State owned) in Rumanian Lei .
I don’t know much about world economics but if it was me I would of kept the hard currency, changed it on the Black Market and made a killing  .

Regards Steve.

Steve…I think the term is ā€œtrade barterā€ā€¦.Rank Xerox imported furniture to pay for their machines; I think there was also a trade barter deal for the Volvo’s. Having said that I do believe that the roadside trade deals were purely cash…

Hello all,

just have been reading the last couple of pages and see that Johnny Neville died. I met him for the first time at Maria’s and met him in Turkey the last time in the year 2000. Can somebody highlight me about what he did lately and what happenend to him a couple of days ago ā– ā–

Allegedly, many things were exchanged by the roadside except the drivers real name and address   .

Couldn’t agree more Roger! I have to import the stuff now I don’t live in the UK anymore. I guess you didn’t find Irn-Bru in the Middle East either.
