I dont think that I knew Alfie, probably rubbed shoulders with him over the years without a doubt, Always sad to hear of bereavement, my sincere condolences to his family, Regards, Fred. H

Alfie……. was a great guy, with the singing voice of an angel, It was always a pleasure to be in his company.
RIP Alfie, we know you will be on the front row of the choir up there………

Intersting pic there Freshir, whats the story behind it?
Is it some form of control point with that fella standing in the middle of the road?

Im guessing thats in Turkey or Iran with that snow covered peak (Mount Arrarat??) in the back ground?

Look forward to seeing any more that you may have

Sad news that about Alfie, I bought my first CB off him at The National for £20 top Chap even fitted it in my old Transcon, most people would have give Him £40 not to have sold it to me  My condolences to His Family & Friends. RIP Driver.

Well done freshir you’ve got a picture on nice 1

Hi boys
Well done fred you got there at last which is what could be said of many climbing up to the top of that hill. Some will say why are those trucks not tightly queing up for the boarder but anyone who has done it will know there were certain parts that required a run. I found that out to my cost when empty lost traction in the dry dust. A Hungarian wag and drag like the one in your photo reversed back down and gave us a pull up. BTW it was good how you got mt Arat in the photo or was that luck
Now you have got the hang of this photo thing please can we have some more.

Regards Keith

re: my pic - the compliments are flooding in from far and wide, keep e’m coming , I shall get some more pic’s posted asap but (Dont laugh} I have now got to remember how I did it, referring to the pic as anyone come up wit an answer to the red Scanny with the red band around it ? ( Roger H usually solves these queries) regards Fred

Hi Fred, thanks for the P.M., I am glad to see that you finally sorted out the photos  , well done and we are all waiting to see some more. The only firm that I can think of at the moment who had red Scanias with a white band around them were Samships from the London area although I am not 100% sure.

Regards Steve.

It looks similar to the one George Brooke ran on Landfast. John Roberts recovered & towed me home with one. Neil drove the DAF. Not sure what the date was

I have just sat and read through this thread and its a fantastic read.I was born to late to enjoy the M/E runs, but i would love to do it even now but i dont think it would be as good as it was in the 70’s,and 80’s.So i guess i will have to just enjoy the pictures and the stories  Please keep them coming.

Thank you…IAN

Just a thought Ian…but have you read my book yet?  plug plug. It’s called The Long Haul Pioneers and is all about Astran and is filled with photos and stories from the men who did the M/E from the very early days - 1964. Well worth the pennies (about £20 on Amazon now). Go on mate…treat yourself. You’ll love it!

Hi Ian, Just to add to Ashley’s post, - I purchased this book at the Gaydon truck bash and it has been widely read by most of the ex ‘Jockeys’ and the feedback has been 100% and considering we have done it been there and got the ‘T’ shirt that must be a good recomendation, Pity that it is too late for you to experience all the mysteries, hassle and bargaining that went with the job, I consider myself very lucky to have been part of it - Go get the book mate, you will never regret it - Regards Fred H

Your location reads in a Zoo are you a Hippo if so you better find a trip to the ME.in a truck without aircon, daycab would be good, the sun and sweat will take of the pounds including the pounds in your pocket forget it mate just read the stories .unless you want to make a small fortune ,starting with a big one will help,so you will end up with the small one.
