Well done Roger , I bet that you washed the dust off yourself on more than one occasion in that pool, it had more sand in the bottom of it than The Gobi Desert
.
If you have a look on the You And Your Lorry thread, there is a photo from John Mcvey, would you say that it was taken by the salt pans between Ankara and Aksaray .
Regards Steve.
I wonder how many drivers picked up one of these at the reception.
I was under the impression that you had to carry your passport with you at all times in Turkey but it has just occurred to me didn’t they take your passport off you before you parked up and collected it from the reception after you had paid as you were leaving
.
Hi Steve
Yes they did but I would’nt give my passport they had no right to it ,I handed in my police control paper ,so if they lost that it would’nt be so much of a problem,it was always hassel but but with loads of trucks trying to get in they just took it.

No but I’m feeling benevolent today so I’ll reveal all!
It’s the “broken bridge” between Tabriz and Tehran. Kinda surprised that you guys didn’t get it immediately as you would have all passed it on your way to Tehran. Well you would have done so in 75/76.
Cheers Ron.
Hi Steve(mushroomman)
Not sure if the pic was taken where u say very flat there dont recall any big parking areas on that side of the road apart from the one in the middle of the lake with the water hole, where I found Tony Baker stuck in the mud one cold winter day,and if he only got that far before stopping for breakfast after leaving Ankara, must have had a bad night on the Effes,Aksaray was always my stopping place for breakfast .if you was in convoy first there started the cooking and got the fresh Eggmec (bread for thoes none turkish speaking) ,if you had some Eggmec left over the next day you could use it to chock the truck wheels as it would have bin like a brick
Then Top of Tarsus for a brew then on to Adana ,for rest, food, and Mosquito bites

It’s funny that you should mention that
.
I do seem to remember that the salt lake was rather flat and as old Jimmy Smethurst use to say " Turkish bread, so soft and fresh one day, as hard as a Monks prick the next "
.
I have been wanting to post this picture for ages for Big Al, it’s one of a David Duxbury’s White which was taken in Dover by Truckerash after arriving back from The Middle East. So Big Al, next time you see Davids son Ian you can show him one of his Dads old motors. I never met David but I can remember meeting a couple of his drivers and one of them telling me what a nice person Davids wife was. She would always make a driver a cup of tea and let him sit in the kitchen while David was working on the truck which I think was a D.A.F. ( or was it an F12 ) in Davis Turners livery.
I think that this great photo should also go on The Preston Hauliers thread, what do you think Big Al .
Another one for the O.G.M.T., where is this.
Dave.

Hi Ian, I sent a P.M. on Friday 12th September 2008 to Dave who used to post on here as Slater and Son and I never received a reply. I was beginning to wonder if there were two Depression Ron’s from Birmingham and I am sure that Ron knew that he was affectionally called “Depresssion” due to his Brummy accent. It would be great to hear from him as I am sure that he would have more than a couple of very interesting memories to share.
Regards Steve.

Hi Steve
There really can only be one Ron ‘Depression’ Slater!! He worked for us for a couple of years lates 80’s/early 90’s. I emailed Dave a few weeks ago and he forwarded Ron’s mobile number and said he’s working at Bakers in Oldbury going the containers - mainly local. If you PM me with all your details. I’ll call him for you and see if its OK to pass you his number.
All the best
Paul
