I take it barry barnes is a bit of a ducker and diver

I first met Barry in 1980.
When we talk of Barry Barnes being “A bit of a ducker & diver” is an under statement. We could all make a bit extra on the side but Barry was… and probably still is the “Daddy” I do not believe there is a trick in the book that Barry does not know and he has been doing the M/E job for 30 years at least. There are not many, if any, on this site that can match that.

Might know B.B would be there somewhere if there’s a few quid to be made, hope he is keeping well.
Must have been about 15 years the last time i seen him, he was on the tap line on the way down with a seller at the time. The only thing he had in the cab was a small camping gas stove and a tin of peaches !! but still smiling or was that because i had some tea and grub.
Tell him Dave Reynolds sends his best when you next see him.
TFN

Mmmm… Dave Reynolds, now that’s a guy who could make money, his truck never stopped, he would do a M/E run and then as soon as he got back it was a quick “F1” service and put a driver on the truck to tip and load for Germany or somewhere close. As soon as the truck had finished the local, Dave would be loaded and off again to the M/E. Talk about loaded wheels on the move, the truck never stopped.

I have just noticed that somebody joined Trucknet last Sunday with the username of Bill Hyde, welcome to the site Bill.
Wasn’t there somebody running down to the Middle East in the 80’s from Yorkshire with the same name  .

i worked with a lad from Hull called Bill Hyde but AFAIK he never got sand between his toes  probably a different bloke, nice lad, think he went to Riby’s (come to think of it, he was a Brummie originally anyway IIRC)

Hullo Mushroomman + jj72,
Bill Hyde (originally a Wessie), is from Pocklington, East Yorkshire, between York and Hull. He’s a really nice bloke and yes he certainly did get some Sand between his toes. He went on with Whittles in if I can recall about 1977, and was there for a few years, he went on there with his old Fiat and then if you recall he had those Seddon Atkinsons. He is still going strong now with a Iveco Stralis 540, on the fuel job.
Cheers, Archie.

Hi Archie, I remember Bill Hyde’s Atki’s met a few of his drivers in commie block early eighties but don’t remember meeting Bill himself.

Hi jj72 I have no idea who you are, or where the axis of diesel is, but I seem to remember reading a post somewhere that you mentioned Cyrill Gardiners name.If you are still in contact with him please give him my regards, I have known him since he worked for Birdales with ‘Chinky Nevill’, and last saw him just before Croomes finished him. I was thinking of starting a post on who had been to most countries (just to stir things up :open_mouth: ) I think Cyrill would probably be the winner.

Hullo Gavin,
And Billy Moore, do you remember him ? he had certainly travelled to some out of the way places.
Cheers, Archie.

Hi Archie, that sounds like the fellow that I was thinking of, the mention of the Seddons Atkis, Pocklington and Whittles jump started me brain into gear  .
Here is another Yorkshire question I think that Wheelnut and jj72 might have some info on this one  , does anybody remember in about 1986/7 three owner drivers from the Hull area who used to run three Volvo F88’s down to the
Middle East known affectionately as The Arthur Negus Roadshow. They seemed a good set of lads, they did have more than a few breakdowns on the way but as far as I know they always got the job done.
Regards Steve.

I can recall something about these three guys, Not the greatest memory in the world but keep thinking Ken Cutsforth and Andrew Hodge from
Hull, Maybe miles off track on this one so apologies in advance. The old brain cells are sure there was a write up on 1 or all of them in the local
paper the Hull Daily Mail

Hi Gavin, you won’t know me - too youthful and good looking to be a grizzled ME veteran myself  I’m not in contact with him, but funnily enough somebody told me about a month ago that old Four Pot is working at Staplehurst Transits, I think he said maybe part-time, but thinking about it he must be easily in his mid/late 60s now? As you say, he must be up there with the best travelled :sunglasses:

Hullo Steve,
I’m glad you remember Bill, a really nice guy. With regard to the three other blokes from Hull, I’m afraid I can’t help you there but I am sure if Wheelnut looks on here, then he will know them. The only other chaps that I remember from Hull, were Colin Ewan and his cousin Colin Bolton, both from Beverley, and Bill Robertson he was from Hull. All subbing on Whittles.

Cheers , Archie.

Hi Archie, I can’t remember running with Bill Hyde or should I say that I can’t think of any particular incidents which stand out. I am sure that I met some of his drivers who were pulling for Whittles from 1980 to 1987 and I remember that his trucks were similar to those of Bill Robertson’s. I think that you once confirmed for me that Harry Woffenden once worked for Bill Robertson.
B.T.W. Archie, what’s a Wessie  .
Regards Steve.

Hullo Steve,
Ha! A Wessie, from the West Riding of Yorkshire (not very good at cricket either, a bit like the Aussies this year, eh ?) Harry I think was on for Bill Robertson
Cheers, Archie.

Hi all, Harry wuff was on for Bill Robertson from Hull I knew Bill very well in the Eighties they contracted for Whittle
Bill used to have the Middle East spec Merc and remember Harry drove a sed atki in Whittles Livery.

With regards to Colin Ewan did he not come down with a virus / viral infection which was life threatening when he was
in the M/E seem to recall him telling me about it, Last time I spoke with him was in the poss mid 90s and he and his
partner were running a company called Oryx Freight from Hull if this rings any bells ? they mainly hauled tilts for MAT
I also remember his cousin Colin Bolton well nice guy as was Colin Ewan.

Q)
Can any of you remember the Panalpina drivers from hull who did the M/E who used to have the F88’s I have been racking my brains trying to
think of there names for years as I used to ship out with them on the old North Sea Ferries and ran with them on occasion as I tended to do my own thing
yet Another great bunch of guys

Regards
Jake

Hullo Jake,
Yes that’s right Colin was taken Ill, in Jordan I believe, and had to be flown home, that would have been about 1979 - 80 if I can remember correctly. The last time I saw him was about 6 years ago tipping in Scarborough, he was in a Red and White six legger F12. I don’t know if he was still trading as Oryx then, when he was Oryx though, they were in Haller Street just off Hedon Road behind the Sportsman, in what was Thomas Allens old yard. I think it is now a shipping company in there owned by two of MAT’s ex office men, Peter Dinsdale and Graham -----? He told me he had moved and was now out somewhere just past Patrington. The only bloke I can think of that was on Panalpina, was Joe Jaques. Just thinking, Jake brake, hmmmm, you’re not Joe are you?
Cheers, Archie.

Hi Archie

Yes your right anout him having to be flown home touch and go I Heard !

This would have been Middlegate Forwardings yard that he shared latterly, Prior to that he was
in Beverley on the little ind est near were they built the Morrisons as I recall T & J Transport
shared the same yard and a few other local hauliers

Regards
Jake

Archie

Forgot to answer you last question, No I am not Joe Jaques but i do recall him vaguely
Many Thanks for the info as you tend to forget these guys till you are reminded

Regards
Jake Brake not Joe Jaques

Hullo Jake,
I’m not too sure about that industrial estate, I’m not at all sure where Morrisons is. I do recall that the family had a small market gardens in a street just opposite the Minster, and Colin kept his little TK Bedford in there, he used to keep that occupied at pea harvest time for Bird’s Eye Foods on Hessle High Road. Yes that was the company Middlegate Forwarding. Funny I must have met you sometime in the past, did you have a truck or was you employed, who was you with ? I also subbed for MAT for a long time. Do you recall that before Bill Robertson had the M/E spec Merc he had a Fiat in Archbolds Livery, still parked in his front garden in Willerby Road.
Cheers, Archie.
