Astran / Middle East Drivers

Nice one Whiplash did you get a chance to talk to the driver.
Eddie, Laing has come a long way since the days of the old Leyand 6 wheeler and F 88’'s and 86’s he had when I first remembered him. We used to use Jock Borthwich who was on Laings Transconti and drag when I was out the country or if things got very active. There load loaders were often seen in our yard doing deliveries and collections as well.
I was surprise to see one of his in Austria one day, but not as surprised as the driver was when he realised who was driving the Italian reg Volvo and fridge on his way to China.

Jeff…

Yeah Jelliot, spoke to the owner/driver.She`s used from time to time and is heading to Belarus later on in the year with aid.It clashes with Gaydon, which he was hoping to attend.Really happy to chat, and share the history, loads of photographs,so he has…

Was he the M/E driver or do he buy it as toy.
I thought it might be Richmonds truck that he brought back from the M/E recently, but his was a 6x2 tag.

Jeff…

No dont believe he did M/E. Bear in mind shes in Ireland now,and not a great deal went from here to there.Would probably have been containerised,or transhipped in UK

Perhaps he should have stuck with the Leyland Beaver ? :sunglasses:

I know it isn’t truck related but I read this and had to laugh!

Before you know it they won’t drive a Tonka unless it’s an auto, super space cab and 500+ bhp!

As a child growing up I loved nothing more than going to the likes of Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania etc with my dad in his truck.
Interested to see if anybody on here knows him, John Keenen, still drives regular to Greece.
When he travelled to the middle east he worked for Owen International Transport Ltd from Stockton on Tees, ring a bell with anybody?
Before I was born used to also do Saudi Arabia etc
I look forward to your reply

That must of be a great childhood I barely ever got to go with my da when I was a child and he only did runs to England any way

It was a great life for kids - much better education than going to school

When his mother had enough of me being away & went her own way, switched back to the sea with this, home & work all in one unit. The Scania main engine ran smooth as silk and at a push gave 12knots.

Not much opportunity for the boy to go to school until A level time, but the Universities counted the time spent away as an extra A level so it worked well for him overall - his mates were jealous as hell, seeing him enjoying himself while they were slaving away in battery farm type schools.

This’ll make you jealous.
Just in case you don’t know who it is his name is Ferdy De Martin and he runs Top Run Trucks. I asked him if he would consider doing tour holidays and he didn’t say no.

Yeah! I first went there 45 year’s ago as a hitch-hiker. Didn’t think I would be back as a wagon driver 5 years later!

How far did you hitch?

Someone who has been there recently tells me that the old notice board, source of so many hitchettes looking for lifts, is no longer on view but the owner has it stored and when he was asked if he wanted to sell it he said no, it is part of the history of the Pudding Shop.

Good for him!

David

Saw Barry Barnes the other day at Pat Duffy’s funeral RIP in Southampton, he said he had been working with Astran for 35 years driving and as an OD does any one on here know him, latterly as a buy load drive sell fly home man, Buzzer.
