Astran / Middle East Drivers

PanX:

Waiting for the ferry at Ostende 1980 . I seem to remember I was taking this machine to Rhymney /Rhumney in Welsh Wales Mick

Well…Well…Well…Thanks for posting this picture Mick. The truck has been a topic of conversation between Robert Dods Brown and myself for many years! He took the photo below but cannot remember who’s the F88 belonged to and it’s been driving him nuts for around 8 years now!
Thanks to you, the mystery has been solved and I can happily tell him who’s it was.
By the way, is that you standing by the F88 Mick ?

Looking for information,on the UCC BRENTWOOD forum page 11 there is a photo of a UNION CARTAGE fridge lorry in Turkey,it seems that it was taken by an Asian Transport driver in about 1972, I knew 4 drivers but can only remember 2 of there names ■■■■ Snow and John Frost.would any body still be around.I dont think ■■■■ would still be around but John would be well into his 70s. I know it was called Astran but before I can only remember it being Asian Transport. Terry

Hi Terry. The UCC photo you refer to was taken by Peter Cannon who was driving one of Asian Transport’s Scania drawbars. Funnily enough he was sharing it with John Frost !

Sadly ■■■■ Snow passed away some years ago, but John is alive and kicking and lives in Cambridgeshire. I speak to him regularly. He’s retired now after giving up his licence recently as he is FED UP with the chaos on the roads! He’s in his mid 70’s now. Looks very fit and well and goes on lots of Cruises around the Med!

If you can let me have your email address I’ll send you a couple of photos… Regards ASH.
Send me a PM - private message - if you prefer.

OK, JUST FOR YOU ASH! But let readers here be under no illusions: although I set this wagon up for Middle-East work and Uwe Ploog was ready to use my services, I ended up running all over Europe instead under the RHLHS flag, alas - I kept running out of cash-flow. It certainly taught me that I’m a better driver than I am a businessman! Here’s the pic.

Hi Robert
That photo Saudi 01 looks like it was taken somewhere near the top end of Camel Alley or on the road after Hofuf heading towards Abu Samra, somewhere near here.

Am I warm ?
Nice selection of photos…they bring back nice memories.
Thanks for sharing.
GS

Spot on GS! Yes, I think I took the pic between the Abu Samra / Selwa border crossing and Hofuf. Love ya Scania!
Robert

I sometimes idly ask drivers what truck they’d choose to make a last nostalgic trip to say, Damascus. Scania 140s and Volvo F88s feature quite stronly. Being a bit of a non-conformist myself, I would choose the lorry pictured here: a Middle-East spec ERF NGC 420 ‘European’ with ■■■■■■■ NTC 335 power and a 9-speed Fuller 'box. As I mentioned in an earlier blog, my book about this model, ‘Lorries of Arabia: The ERF NGC 420’ is due out this Spring, courtesy of Old Pond Publishing. However, I’d love to hear from anyone who ran with these on M/E work or drove one even. I have interviewed some who did, of course, including Trans Arabia’s Jerry Cooke. Theres still time fro me to squeeze in any extra nuggets of info on these venerable vehicles on the TIR-trail when I proof-read the book. Cheers! Robert

0 Talking of the combination of ASTRAN and NORTH AFRICA, here is a picture I took in Tangier. It shows the Scania 142 with the Irish registration GAZ. It had a lift tag-axle, a high ‘Esteppe’-style roof and, wait for it - a 13-speed Fuller gearbox. Woah! Now THAT’S my kind of lorry: Scania V8, Fuller box, hi-roof and Astran colours. Sigh! I was parked up alongside it in Tangiers port and I had a long chat with the driver, a lovely bloke called John Allan. I believe he lived in Greece. I would that more ‘proper’ lorries populated our ports these days - anything with a Fuller Road-Ranger would do nicely…
Mr Hackford

Yes Robert it is Me Your correct, Johnny Allan was a nice bloke, that unit was Gary Lions’s before He had it, John has passed away a good few years ago, some smashing photos You’ve posted.A well travelled man was John He’d been all over the show, I suspect He was in Tangiers going on a to a film set somewhere. Looking at the picture of My Volvo it looks awfully clean. Funny old spot The Plague De Nations, do You know its history & why it was built ? I sort of know vaguely.

Robert1952 likes the ERF so i thought I would post this pic of an ERF on internal work in Saudi 1977 it was one of a small fleet run by Cunard

You are right Fly-sheet, John was doing a film run when I met him in Tangiers. 4 or 5 years later, when I was driving for CSB of Sandwich, I did a film run myself down over the High Atlas Mountains to Ouarzazate in Southern Morocco - a nice run. Robert

Did you come across this Scania, owner driver opperated. Last seen in Saudi pulling from Sealand from Damman

Cheers Backsplice! Yes, Cunard ran a fleet of 18 ERFs out of Jeddah on ‘internals’, two of which were NGC 420s. Your pic shows one of six double-drive B-series ERFs with 350 ■■■■■■■ and 9-speed Fullers. Great stuff. Robert

I’ve found some more Harrier / Turkey pics of my '95 trip.

And some more Gulf pics from when I was driving for Jeff:

Robert did you ever go onto the salt lake at Aksaray and take photos there? I always wanted to do it but our company had a very strict no camera, no recording devices policy, so it never happened.

Jeff…

Oops double post

Robert1952 her are another two that I found taken later that day

Sorry must have been taken another trip as he has a container aboard ■■?
