I had to help a driver at amazon a few months ago. He couldnt figure out how to disconnect his airline…had never been shown and had only passed his class 1 a few weeks earlier…o and he was a civvy…

How could he have not been shown?
How did he pass his test?
Coupling and uncoupling is part of it!

Wasn’t part of my test 30 years ago

Maybe he did his test in a W&D?

The guy Degsy helped out said he’d passed his Class 1 a few weeks ago so must have been taught and done it as part of his test.

Surely this is a wind up… I mean someone who has passed there class one can’t couple or uncouple…where he get his licence from a crisp packet…

I mean I passed my test 5 year ago and haven’t really used it much due to personal circumstances … yet I still know the basics and should the opportunity arise in the coming months it wouldn’t be an issue…

I can couple and uncouple an artic but have never split,or been shown/told how to split, a drawbar. Both combinations have the same license. Could be that ex-soldier driver was trained on a drawbar.

Taking the thing apart and putting it together again only became part of the test in the mid 90s.Low loaders and tankers are usually kept in one piece.Wagon and drags are quite a different kettle of fish as well.I think that some on here have been a bit harsh with the guy.

Well at least he had the balls to admit to it. Many would not until they had done hundreds of pounds of damage.

+1

There are no stupid questions just stupid outcomes.

Surely the agency should be asking drivers if they know how to couple/uncouple vehicles? It wouldn’t take much to show him how to do it either, it isn’t exactly rocket science. The main thing surely, is his ability to drive safely and follow the rules of the road when assessing? A bit harsh to end the assessment for that IMO, especially as he was being honest with them.

I’ve said it before, agency people don’t know/don’t care about the actual driving side. It’s their job to get bums on seats. They should be asking for proof of recent driving experience.

Companies should show the driver how to do it or just send him packing and then charge the agency a training fee/fine equal to the amount they pay the driver for that shift. That’ll soon make them ask the right questions.

We live in an age where the hauliers are not employing and training their own drivers. How is a keen young person to obtain PRACTICAL experience or training.During busy periods a new licence holder might get a start but is expected to hit the ground running. The DCPC time could have been better spent.
