To answer the question in the title, they don’t want my blood, I’m the wrong type of person…
What type of person do you have to be to be refused? I’m guessing here that your lifestyle may pose a risk, but thats different to “a type of person”.
I don’t donate because i faint at the sight of needles coming near me, others are not bothered by a little prick !!
Er… awkward
Oh come on! Every one knows Bertie is a casual ■■■ worker, no need to make it the elephant in the room.

I have received blood and had loads during an organ transplant (12 pints I think) thank god for those of you who donate both blood and organs THANK YOU SO MUCH.

i actually think thats WRONG in every way! What does it matter if your gay/straight/lesbian■■? blood is blood! its ALL screened anyway, so the risk of HIV/Aids being passed through donation would be tiny anyway! I just think there afraid someone might catch “gay” or something!

like I say, PATHETIC!

Well said that man! I am straight and am comfortable with my ■■■■■■■■■ and comfortable being around people who are gay/lesbian as a couple off my friends are. If I was on a hospital bed bleeding out I wouldn’t give a flying ■■■■ where my blood transplant came from gay straight or bi-■■■■■■ if someone’s kind enough to donate half hour off there time to potentially save my life then I’d be eternally grateful regardless. All donations are screened any way so not every gay person is infected with HIV, you here radio adds etc asking to give blood yet alot off people with “different lifestyles” to the rest off us can’t although they may be as disease free as I am.
I’ve only given blood a few times, but not in England. I am a registered organ donor here though!
Any organs harvested goes to the compatible person on the top of the very long list, not to whoever can pay the most. Sorry Chas. Enjoy your caveman blood/corneas.

Well said chaps. Until recently it was a blanket ban, if you had ever had ■■■ with another man you could not give blood. Then when they changed this everyone thought it was a victory. It wasn’t. So while now gay men can give blood, but only after they’ve been celibate for a YEAR and they can still never give blood if they’ve ever had unsafe ■■■. I think its totally pathetic in my opinion and a clear example of outright discrimination. I would give blood as often as I could if I was allowed but I’m not, and I’m not being celibate for the rest of my days just so I can be a regular blood donor
I’ve given blood for years, not bothered who or where it goes to, never thought about it tbh. Also a registered organ donor, preferably after I’m dead but with these politicians who knows. I’m almost possibly certain they would go to somebody at the top of the list in dire need & good luck to them, and not be sold to the highest bidder or some “celebrity”. George best anyone?

Reading this thread has been like listening to a load of old wimmin hypochondriacs in a GP’s waiting room when they’re fighting over the last 15 year-old Reader’s Digest on the rack…

I cant believe we’re even talking about peoples ■■■■■■■■■ in this day and age… For example it angers me that someone people describe others by the colour of their skin or their ■■■■■■ orientation etc!
switchlogic:
But it doesn’t. No more than certain types of ■■■ men and women get up to yet they are still allowed.
It’s just maths. It’s the probability that the donor has HIV multiplied by the probability that the screening for HIV gives a false negative.
They’re trying to keep the product of those two numbers below a certain (extremely low) level, and so they use statistical data to estimate the first number by looking at a bunch of risk factors, including male homosexual ■■■. Obviously as the screening for HIV approaches perfect accuracy, then they’ll care less and less about the donor’s lifestyle.
In the not too distant past, a whole bunch of people were killed by HIV contracted through contaminated blood projects, so caution is justified.
Donations are refused for dozens of reasons - it doesn’t have to be thought of as discrimination against gays, the tattood, international travellers or those who recently had fillings…
