I can imagine the guy with his sledge watching one with wheels attached and saying to his mate that it’ll never catch on - them wheels 'll drop off sure as eggs.
On the other hand steam engine drivers couldn’t get into a diesel quick enough. Never mind the prestige - it was just so much easier.

As for muckaways point about the new volvos not standing up some of that is a case off lorrys been mid sold or skimping company’s.
Can’t argue with that; We put the FEs on the road just after 2 Daf CFs arrived, I got to try both when a diff broke in mine. I’ve been told the FEs were £10000 per lorry cheaper which over 4 years, can’t have been much of a saving due to the downtimes. I prefer driving the FEs especially in Oxford City centre as the ride height is better for spotting cyclists and pedestrians but the cramped cab and poor gearing (top gear above 50mph sends the revs out of the green band) makes it a bit thirsty.
We wouldn’t have the FM cab on 6wheelers as with steel bodies the powers that be were worried we wouldn’t get 15tonnes on. Payload’s not so important now as they’ve finally realised reliability and toughness sclaws the money back and there’s a good chance the FMX may make an appearance on the fleet.
Now I would swap the Foden for one of those…after the olympics

Well I for one, as you may have guessed, love all the new technology. I love my automatic box, I love being able to set the cruise control and retarder speeds so I can go up hill and down dale without touching the pedals, I love my TomTom live with traffic and weather and google search and I actually love the digital tacho for ease of use. The argument that more technology in trucks causes them to break down is just a myth. Trucks are more reliable than ever. And if it does break down you plug it in and it tells you the fault. In my 10 years of driving I’ve needed a recovery truck twice. Once in an N reg FL and once in one of those CAT powered Fodens,oh and a third time when I hit the ditch
As for the arguement that all this technology isn’t needed well if we went down that route humanity would never have evolved. People probably thought computers or the Internet or smart phones weren’t needed. I imagine some of you still do.
I’m torn here, one thing that really impresses me about my current ride is the simplicity of it, but I was an advocate of the automated manual transmissions when they first started to hit the road at the turn of the century (OMG how oldtime does that sound) I like the one touch operation of cruise/retarder/gearbox and I’m a big fan of ipods and this here laptop, but I do feel that a lot of stuff is there for no other reason than because it gives the engineers a hard on, sometimes it benefits us all, other times it goes un-noticed (which is probably when technology is at its best) sometimes it over complicates things.
Things like ad-blue are to keep emissions down, the levels were set and that’s the way to meet the requirements, personally on that I believe that engine manufacturers should have been left to build the best engine they could, they would’ve gone for power, that’s what engineers do, but power would come from increased efficiency and therefore would also be reducing fuel consumption considerably and reducing emissions at the same time.
That’s the thing euro 3 motors were probally the most efficient diesels we had the M11 ■■■■■■■ scanias 12 litre 6 and the d20 MAN were misers on it and if it wasn’t for the euros they may be better by now and that’s got to be good.
Muckaway the fmx is IMHO the mottor to beat as a 8 legger it truely takes up where foden left off as a construction chasis and I shift really does work for a tipper.

Talk to the old drivers and they’ll tell you that; but they’ll also admit that they missed the challenges and particular skills associated with driving steam engines, as well as the camaraderie that went with the job. No different really to our trade.

Fixed it for you Luke,no need to thank me.
Truck driver trapped under tonnes of paraphernalia.
A lorry driver had a lucky escape when his Scania veered off the road, Rescue services were called in when they realised the driver was trapped under a mountain of Waitrose cans and exotic coffee jars. There was need of a crane to lift the microwave oven of his chest, and firefighters were called because it looked like there was something hazardous running down the drivers face. This turned out to be just hair gel and not bacon fat as at first suspected
It is believed another person escaped without injury but was later found having a tantrum with the driver. Police were amazed to find dozens of pet shop boys cd’s and fan magazines on the road and wonder if that is what caused the lorry to slip off the road.

Wasn’t a breakdown though was it?
And my modern full of technology truck drove itself back to the yard even after that.

Smirk all you like NMM,who instigated the post post doctoring phenomenon? Luke, not taking the p.iss at all,cos the way the winter is going over here, very mild and lots of black ice, wouldn’t be surprised if I followed suit in the near future.
Back on topic briefly, older is definately better but that’s another story !!
This is a 47, the forward view is much better (not that this would bother a tipper driver )
And this is a 37;
It’s worth pointing out BTW that both of these are British built, examples of both are still in regular service although both designs are well over 40 years old. Any politicians reading this and thinking of buying foreign stuff, take note!
