Apparently theres another big firm about to pop up that way, with the loss of around 200 jobs, including lots of Eastern European drivers. Source; a Gilberts driver on his last trip abroad.
I was in Holland last week and was told that a guy called Harry was in the ■■■.
and that was from a Cloggie.
That will be a big downfall then as if its the Harry im thinking of hes got hundreds of trucks. Vos a shame that will be.
i did a subbie job for Gilberts a couple of months back over to Holland and teamed up with one of there drivers, little Mick and i dont think he had any idea this was coming. what a shame for them all. He was a real helpful bloke too
I wonder whats happened to the subbie who worked for them for ages, i think his name waas Ian Gent, he had a left ■■■■■■ 143 4x2, blue and white, may have been an ex MacHayes International from Norfolk truck. I think all his work was subbying to Gilberts.
I have an inkling it was John Gent - used to chat to him on Harwich boat when i was doing flowers. No disrespect - he must be near “retiring age” - but then i know drivers who go on long past 65.
this was the guy i saw getting on a ferry at felixstowe a few years ago but i bow to your superior knowledge chaps so do you know this guy this trucks really tidy
got the pic off www.padborg-express.com the guy that took the pic as got some good pics in the guest pages
Im not too sure how long ago i saw John Gent written on the truck Carl, maybe he sold up a couple of years ago then , we will hope somebody can come along and tell us…
Jon Gent is from Spalding not Hull. He bought that truck from new and it was sprayed in Holland. That is still the original paint and has just had the name changed by the guy who owns it now. Its no longer a working truck and is just for show now.
he sold the truck a while back after retiring but carried on work ing part time for Gilberts as he is now into his 70’s! The majority of his work was subbying for Gilberts and he also did a stint pulling for Van der Luyts from Oestgeest in Holland.
Last time I saw John Gent was a couple of years ago in Neufchateau,he was on his way back from Swiss with a load of chocolate,a regular Gilbert job.
He said he would be packing it in soon,he was going to carry on until the truck packed up,but as it was still going strong he would sell it and maybe do a bit of casual for Gilberts.
A real nice guy,as were most of Gilberts driver’s.
