Any concrete mixer drivers ( owner drivers) on here?

I’m not being rude but being a ‘franchised haulier’ isn’t running your own business. The quarry does everything for you, provides everything for you. They even deduct items from your monthly salary…sorry earnings, much the same as if you were an employed

I agree, its not the same as running your own business. Ive combined both with having hire trucks. Its as close as you could get to being employed.
BUT dont forget your vehicles are still your asset. There are still massive tax breaks for Contract Hauliers as owner drivers doing other work.
Buy a new truck get £20k off your tax bill in 1st year and so on. Earn £30k pay £1k tax

d. Wait 90 days to get paid, run the risk of not being paid at all. Not monthly on 18th of every month without fail.
Agreed but you don’t get to set your own rates. Example, I managed 15x£25 on Monday running 6miles round trips. You don’t make that kind of dough working for the quarries

6 mile round trip i get paid just a bit over double what you get. (£50.67).

e. Either do all your own VAT work and submit VAT returns or get your accountant to do it. ££££`s
Piece of ■■■■. I done mine today online, took me 15mins.

The entry might take 15 mins.
I just put all my invoices in an envelope with my VAT 100 and get back fully itemised spreadsheets and the VAT man paid.
No seperate bank account for VAT money.Tarmac do it all. No comebacks either

As from the 1st of this month Tarmac are not doing your vat.

Yep. Your right. I wonder if they will give me a reduction on my 38
quid.

No mate, you’ll still pay your £456 a year like the rest of the whole fleet. Not bad little earner for Tarmac

Hammer,

You have to take their finance. It is uncompetetive.

What interest rates would you expect to get if “you” were to buy a new truck at £90k?
Bearing in mind if you did get into financial difficulty, couldn`t pay the finance and the truck was repossessed it would be auctioned off and you would be responsible for the balance. If this happens at Tarmac you can hand back the truck with 28 days written notice. Its in the contract. Tarmac are guarantors on HP agreement. They say they credit check you but, funny it never shows on Experian.

You have to take their insurance (wonder what Towergate’s kickback is?). It is uncompetetive.
Mixer Driver has had a quote, Ive had insurance elsewhere. I couldnt get competitive insurance because of the "block" insurance mixer drivers are on. Doesnt go on individual claims, only as a group.

If your buying new they tell you the price. It is uncompetetive.

I would like to know what price Joe Bloggs could get on a cab/chassis by walking in to a dealer and getting the same truck.
I know the prices for, Scania, Volvo, DAF, MAN and Renault on the Tarmac “Matrix pricing”. I sat down with Renault and specced my cab/chassis and I was also told by Renault nobody else can get the prices because of Tarmac`s volume of truck purchases.

You have to select from one of their ‘chosen’ makes.

Scania, Volvo, DAF, MAN and Renault ? What else would you buy?Only Mercedes have been struck off their suppliers list because of major problems with Axors as mixers throughout the country and dealer back up.

They do your books.

I dont see a problem with that. Fully itemised self invoicing, delivery address, Radial and price. Just check your ticket copies against them.
Full diesel statements, date volume etc

If there is no work you stand. Tough [zb].

Same as any other haulier. But £1200 guaranteed minimum payment that comes from your own General Reserve.
Thats what its there for.

If there is work, no matter how bad their rates you are unable to take better paying work.

How are we going to go elsewhere and get better paid work with a concrete drum on the back?
Hanson, Cemex and Lafarge are hardly going to call me and give me better rates than their CH`s.
What else can I carry? Its not a Tipper

We are just subbies who choose to enter into a franchise scheme that suits thousands, as myself.

I don`t think this company would enter the scheme if it was crap!

Don’t be fooled by the general reserve being for your wage of you don’t pick enough to cover the costs, thats your money, they ain’t paying you it as its your money that they have took off you at £350 pee month.

That reserve is there for when they force you into buying a new truck, it’s your deposit.

Just out of interest, do you get taxed twice on the reserve? Your paying the tax when it’s paid into your reserve on their first place as its classed as you’ve earned it but are you taxed on it again if your paid if our of your reserve?

We got 5% pay rise as from the 1st may 2012!!! That only makes me think they will hit us with a rise in something soon to take it back off us.

Thats correct. It also carrys towards monies you have to prove to the Traffic commisioner for O`licensing. £8100 for the first truck,£4500 for the rest. Thats why there is General Reserve on every account/truck.
My mate was lucky he had £2500 Gen Reserve built up when his Merc gearbox packed in.(£6500) Tarmac still let him pay with an order number and clawed the rest back £350 a month. If your a “proper” owner driver, your on your own.

Don`t know Mixer driver. Your accountant should be aware of it and adjust accordingly.

When did you hear about that then! I havn`t had any letter. Might be there when i get home.

I’ve never been into my general reserve so never had to ask my accountant. I’ve actually got more than the £6000 in my reserve.
The letter come Saturday morning, it stated that central was on less than other areas and didn’t have the benefits other areas have but we will be brought in line with the rest of the areas in the near future.

Good news! I got the letter as well. 5% rise again from the 1st May with the 8% we had in Jan.

Better than a kick in the bo**ocks

At this rate everyone will be wanting to buy a mixer

Just been reading a few of these posts, and feel like it’s none of my business really, I’m just wondering what was the attraction in being a contract haulier initially and is it as loaded against you as it sounds?

Am wondering how come my letter says 2% increase !!!

That is a strange one! Which Tarmac area are you? I know West Midlands area was already higher than us.
Edited to say Sorry, thats been asked before, you`re Aberdeenshire, northern

Massey 1200,
Do you have an 8m or 6m?
Id be interested if you wish to compare rates with different areas. If your 6, Ill get rates from a mate to compare.

I’m 6m and aint got clue what my current rates are as they change month by month, I couldn’t tell you what I get for 1 rad.

I’m happy to compare and I’ll look on my sheet and let you know what I get for current 1 rad.

Maybe Massey is on better rates than me at moment hence my 5% to her 2% and maybe you ain’t got one because your on more anyway.

Ill try and see what my rate for 1 rad is, I ain’t got clue off top of my head.

I based my comment on the fact that on conversation with contracted hauliers their finance rates were roughly 2% above what I was able to get for myself on the open finance market for broadly similar sums of money. Maybe brand new trucks might be different.

I got a quote off Towergate for my tipper, it was about 30% higher than I found elsewhere. Maybe mixers are different.

As I’ve put on this thread, a mate of mine found them to £8,000 more expensive on a 6x4 Daf about 7 years ago. I’ve been told what an O/D locally paid for his Volvo 8x4 and wasn’t overly impressed.

Again, only speaking from local experience on tippers. A few lads that changed them were ‘strongly advised’ to have Scania, Volvo or Daf only. I know of one that asked for a Hino and wasn’t ‘allowed’ and another who tried for a Renault (about 4 years ago) and told the same.

Obviously, as a tipper owner I come at it from a different viewpoint. However, the point stands for contracted hauliers on the tippers.

Hammer,

I think we`ll just agree to disagree on the Contract Haulier scheme.

Its suits me fine. Im happy. If youre happy doing what you do, all well and good.

Now stop picking on us “pretend” Owner Drivers
