I’ve yet to get my 1st drive since gaining my LGV licence so have no comment about the hours and conditions. However, thought you might like to know…my wife works part time for our local Spar, she earns £6.48 ph in rural Devon!

Indeed. If you have experience and there is work available then you probably could earn a lot more, and in the cities there agencies that state they are desperate for Class 1 and Class 2 drivers.
However, you are worth nothing without experience and the few companies that do take on newbies are overwhelmed with applicants and also pay little.
If that company was taking on newbies at that rate would people still complain?
There is a company locally that is doing plant delivery (little green things from a plant nursery) and they’re paying £6.60 for C1 work. They won’t take me (despite me having over 8 years actual C1 experience) because I have my C+E I’m over-qualified for the job… Yet they don’t have any suitable C or CE work for me and only have the position for getting drivers as they supply the people that work in the green houses too!
I moved away from Wales because there weren’t many jobs available…
I got turned down for a skip hire job once. The bloke said I’m worried that you’ll leave for a class 1 job because the moneys better. So he took on a bloke who just passed his test, who left 3 months later when he passed his class 1

Thing is if your married with a couple of kids and there’s a job paying say 300 a week take home by the time you get the benefits plus rent and council tax paid your probaly taking around that. It’s not right but that’s why some people will play the system.
Was only saying that to a mate this morning kr. If they still paid out housing benefit you would get some ponces back to work, saving the benefit payment (job seekers). After all, they’ve got the house anyway, better to save the js and gain some tax money from them working
The system isn’t really geared to helping us get back into work. I could have been working sooner this year if things had been more flexible but as it was no agency I spoke to, despite saying they were desperate for drivers, could confirm I would get at least 3 days a week
