schrodingers cat:
Last wek Dairycrest took 2p per litre off their farmers, bloody robbers.
Well the farmers live in rural areas so rates will be lower but if they dont like it they should look for a better paying job and stop giving away free bacon butties and cuppas
not been on for a while, but Kemaro am i right in saying you had some bad problems with your employer? seriously not a knock at you but would you consider this wage if you were left alone to get on with the job in comparison to being constantly hassled?
I left a better paid job to work for a local guy who pays crap (according to some) but i,m left alone to plan my own work, route ect as long as job gets done no one bothers me,

If your boss is getting the job done whilst paying crap wages (your words) why would he wish to bother you? That would be like kicking ■■■■ out of your dog while it tried to attack the burglar trying to climb thru your window
i worked for a multi national company, salary pay, told what to do, how to do it, not allowed to use my own brain, treated like ■■■■■■ for £10 p/h class 2, salaried at 40 hours but constantly doing more… i,m now getting 7.50 per hr ,o/t after 8 hrs a day,but no hassle so i,m actually enjoying my work for a change, plus a bonus at xmas and end of tax year… i think i,m on the lowest paid job ive ever had but i,m actually happier…
I don’t think that a driver should have to put in 50-70 hours to make a decent wage BUT as the bread winner you have to do what is necessary to put food on the table.
Back to your OP I don’t think the advertised hourly rate is acceptable but it is not an insult, it is the going rate for monkeys these days. Also with the hours on offer it would provide a reasonable pay packet at the end of the week all be it for plenty of hard work.
I live in an area of high housing costs where the job oppotunities for drivers are low and the wages poor. I know I have to chase the money to provide a decent standard of living for my family. I would much rather make that money over 40 hours and sleep in my own bed every night but if I’ve got to do 60+ hours and be away all week to achieve it that’s what I’ll do.
Pay in our industry is getting worse not better and I don’t personally think that will change for a long time. All of these perceived driver shortages and the promise of being able to name your price will never happen. Also your location will have a major impact the money you can make unless your prepared to travel for it.
Cheers

FTFY! If that was the going rate I wouldn’t be driving anything never mind an artic for all hours. It’s the rate some chancer is willing to hire monkeys at.
kemaro:
A firm local to my area had a job advert requiring class 1 & 2 drivers for local farm collections of the white stuff , gave them a rang for the breakdown of what’s on offer
£6.25 Ph for first 9 hours then time & a half after that, 6 days on 2 off rolling rota, minimum of 12 hours a day usually more upto 15, 4,5,6 am starts required ,
Potential to earn over 500 a week but have no life doing so…
Only by running bent! 48 hours average remember…
If you did 3 x 15 hour shifts a week, you’d still only be getting £112.50 a day - and doing a 15 hour is the only way to invoke that much of the higher hourly rate!
Oh, and this assumes you get paid for your breaks as well - a rarity these days in itself.
Whereabouts in the UK is this job advertised / based?
I am not interested in the least in the job as personally the money is an insult to all truck drivers and the resposability they hold in their hands.
I get £10 + / hour for working in UK during a day and get home at night…anything outside of this I charge and get £150 / day for anything from a van to an artic.
If I do agency I get £10+ / hour and sometimes a shift allowance…but don’t do this very often.
This is what I consider a reasonable rate for the job…but cannot understand how some of you guys live on some of these wages offered.
Also please dont think Im bragging, its just what I consider right for the job

Most companys doing milk collection do it on the Domestic rules so the above dosnt apply , also opting out of the WTD enables you to get more done …
brushstroke:
well if it is the same company as who im working for , on a 6/2 rota with bonuses ect you will be on at least 450 a week T/H and none of the day routes come close to 12hrs unless you have had problems
I also work on the milk for Turners, so I know it’s not our lot he’s talking about. For starters we run on domestic rules, so 12 hour + days are out of the question, plus they don’t run any class 2 tankers

Thank you
West Wales. Pembrokeshire to be precise.
So there’s bugger-all agency work outside builders merchants (and that’s scarce enough) and there’s also plenty of people with HGV licences, as much of the work down here’s seasonal, agricultural contracting, oil refineries and holiday stuff.
I agree with the rest of you that the money’s crap but there’s one massive bonus…
