Amputee driver

oneleg:
Thanks to all the great advice everybody gave me I now have three interviews lined up thank you very much

That’s great news, hope all goes well for you , remember keep a calm , confident , posative aproach, & good luck

Not sure if it’s relevant, given the three interviews lined up, but which leg is the prosthetic? I understand if you don’t feel you want to answer that on a public forum.

Good luck with the interviews.

There’s a geezer who drives for Downton who I see every now and again who has a false leg and is doing the business, he’s a top guy as well. Let that be an inspiration to you.

It’s worth noting that some companies could well jump at the chance of employing a capable driver with such a disability, as IIRC there’s often encouragement from councils to fill quotas of disabled persons in the workplace and it’s also possible that the company could get some sort of grant.

My old boss at Nightfreight, Andy Rainbow, was an insulin-dependent diabetic and this counted towards the quota; when he set up a new depot in Stevenage, of which I was Ops manager, he employed an office cleaner with slight learning difficulties to achieve the same objective there. As a cleaner she wasn’t much use BTW but she did make a decent cuppa!

For that reason, perhaps the OP should have a word with the local Jobcentre to wise up on this, might help him open a few doors.

Good luck, and respect to you for not giving in.

It’s exactly this kind of attitude which puts the ‘so called’ disabled into a category that defines them as either (a) employable or (b) unemployable.

Untill we can understand that everyone, regardless of ability, has a role to play, then we can never achieve true harmony in the workplace.

I would HATE with a passion being given a job because it qualified the company concerned for some kind of sainthood award, I absolutely DETEST the system that our governments & councils put in place to encourage such small minded behaviour.

Give me a job on my merits, this is me, I want to work & I will not be your token [zb] !

I quite agree with your sentiments, Chas, and so would my old boss; but I’m minded to suggest that however distasteful it may seem to some, it does offer an advantage which goes some way towards counteracting the discrimination that disabled people undoubtedly encounter. That was its original intention, unfortunately it got hijacked by the “do-gooder” fraternity and lost a lot of its credibility. I was not intending to patronise the OP, merely suggesting something which he could turn to his advantage in today’s dire employment market.

If he’s good enough (as is no doubt the case) then his own qualities will prove themselves. I apologise for the unavoidable solecism, but it does offer him a foot in the door.

Hello mate, I saw a one armed driver at DSV in Immingham last week. I didn’t think it was allowed (shows what I know).

You’d be wrong !!

By the way what day did you see the driver in DSV?

Pretty sure it was last Thursday afternoon. Maybe the guy had his arm in a sling and I’m blind as well as daft?

I wouldn’t go that far  I’ve only one arm and I drive HGV’s thus this is how I know

A driver with one arm is quite legal to drive a vehicle as long as it is adapted for the driver according to their disability.
I drive a sprinter and a transit from a wheelchair.I could also drive a lorry if it is suitably adapted for a driver to use hand controls.
It wouldn’t be very practical to do so,but it would be legal.

This is Alan Kempster who was hit by a truck while the driver was drunk, double amputee, arm and leg missing

There is another rider with one arm who races very quickly at Mallory Park and comes from Hinckley

Fair enough Kernan, I only mentioned it because I hoped to encourage the OP. I’m sorry if you read my post the wrong way. I’m pleased to learn that one armed drivers can drive trucks.

As it happens I knew a Road Racer who only had the use of one arm. The ACU made it very difficult for him to race but he stuck to his guns.

BTW I was at DSV on Wednesday not Thursday so my memory is going as well…

I have seen a one armed HGV driver he was putting fuel in few years back on bulk ( D Forrester was the co IIRC )

There is also a one armed biker round where I live although not seen him in a while did have his bike adjusted accordingly & had to retake his test

there is a driver works on TNT who only has one arm , he seems to manage just fine i see him regular at kingsbury . i also used to work with a chap years ago who only had one leg , full manual aswell and he work for the firm for years .

Lyrics:
We got married last Friday
My girl was right there beside me
Our friends were all gone
We were alone
Side by side

We were so happily wed when
She got ready for bed then
Her teeth and her hair
She placed in a chair
Side by side

One glass eye so tiny
One hearing aid so small
Then she took one leg off
And placed it on the chair by the wall

I stood there broke hearted
Most of my girl had departed
I slept on the chair
There was more of her there
Side by side

Quality Malc!
