You can do whatever you want to do in life…It is ALL up to you.
I have done many things, both here and on other continents…Using both the brain and the brawn.
Got qualies as long as your arm…One thing I have never stopped doing…Learning! It is the one thing that keeps you alive.
I have an international business and distributors throughout Europe…I drive to get away from everything in life and because I enjoy it.
I know folk think I am bulling when they ask me what else I do, as they only see me once in a while…But I dont care, if I did, I wouldnt be where I am now
I earned a years wages driving in the first week of July this year, but it was not at all satisfying. I consider myself to be one of the luckiest people alive.
Remember…You really can do whatever it is you want to do, you just want to have to do it
i spent best part of 40 years mending the things…got sick of the heavy work…handballing springs…wheels hubs…gearboxes etc…now in driving for a living…easy peasy…easiest job ive ever had…climb in truck…select cruise contol…autobox…sit back and steer???whats not to like??
30 minutes into a motorway cruise any hassle is forgotten, good tune on the radio, CC on, 52mph nothing for miles and jobs a good un.
One downside is why from thinking I will have a cup of tea to actually doing one does it take about 20 chuffin miles.
Another gripe is that I jumped in somebody else truck the other day and the radio was tuned to AM and I had to sneakely figure out which button got it to FM for me disco tunes. Also the engine break wasn’t at my favourite setting, apart from that alls fine and dandy.
Ive got a good 20 years until I reach retirement age,If My health permits Me,I could see Myself driving trucks until then…We all know that sometimes We have the odd bad day and say to ourselves “must be a better way to earn a crust” but We soon forget them days. The good days is what its all about.I love it.
I’m 48 when I was at school I used to get wrong for looking out the window. Teachers would say you’ll never get a job looking out the window! I showed them, as a driver it’s essential I look out the window. If only I’d had some mirrors on my chair I might have taken in something that was on the board??
I’m 48 yrs old now and been in transport since leaving school(well they kicked me out if truth be told) .Had my HGv since 1989 and had some ■■■■■ jobs and some great jobs. Had 8 years on my own running 2 vans parcels etc. thought about retraining when times we’re lean but at the end of the day I’m happy doing what I do. Been tramping for 7 years now and couldn’t see myself doing anything else. Money’s good no one looking over my shoulder plan my days to suit me along with a good planner who makes sure the truck earns it’s keep… What’s not to love…■■?

Anyone ever been in a laybay and an old chap approached with the opening gambit of ‘I used to drive trucks’-- que a long walk down memory lane.
Chas:
I have a Ph.D in physics & I used to be a captain of industry.

Ha, he’s off again. Good old Walter Mitty
In answer to the question, I dont plan to be driving trucks in 10 years time, or even 5. Love it though I do I always wanted to get out before it was too late and have another career. Ive achieved all my childhood driving ambitions now and I’m not the sort who wants an easy life so time to set the wheels in motion again. Maybe I’ll be a captain of industry… (awaits Walter’s withering reply…)
Thank you all for taking the time to reply , some interesting points . As said in the o.p , I love my job , at the moment I’m lucky to work for a good firm which gives plenty of challenge , my major ambition when I started driving was to drive thru Europe and better what my step dad did , this I’ve done . Next is to go a little bit further , And not be ur 'Jo average ’ lorry driver .
Work for the best firm(s) , travel far and wide , earn a good living , enjoy . And one day run my own motor (s) … Hopefully anyway .then pack it all up

The depression and deliberately planned unending mass immigration (working turkeys voted for their very own Christmas and willingly continue to do so) have changed a normal working bloke’s prospects, i believe permanently, the clock cannot be turned back.
Best of luck in your life plan i really hope you get to do what you want, the reality for most is far different, people can still find good terms and conditions but they are increasingly rare.

A rare ray of sunshine on an otherwise cloudy day.

Nope, i’m quite happy behind the wheel, clocking the totty etc.
Don’t have to play office politics or kiss anyones arse, few miserable sods at work so i just avoid 'em get me keys and bugger off out the way, and then go home every night.
Yes things have changed, but you don’t have to be like all the other bloody sheep.
You can still take a pride, drive properly (even though the lorry fights back), keep your motor and equipment in top condition, be polite to customers even other road users, be pleasant and cheerful, the jobs still good like that we are still individuals.
Just because thousands of others licence holders are miserable as sin, wingeing and whining about every little thing, take no pride nor care of their vehicle and equipment, drive like numpties etc doesn’t mean we have to, its good to be different…as a bonus it winds 'em up reall badly if you’re not miserable like them and they can’t stand it if someone takes a pride.
You can still try to be a Knight of the Road if you want to, Chav behaviour isn’t compulsory in road transport yet, the choice of who and what you are is yours.
excellent post i was intending to retire this year at 57y.o.,but wife walking out a few years ago changed all that…but hey ho…life go’s on!until i win the lottery i will continue to drive, health permitting.working for a good company,IMO,DHL,and a good boss,i let the moaners get on with it,just keep on looking out the window and enjoying the scenery
