Is it illegal to drive while wearing rose coloured glasses?
Imagine the scene!! Young “Bender” riding shotgun up the M1 with “funny shades” on,feet not touching the cab floor, devouring the pages of the latest ■■■■■ mag-----leans across to the driver and holding the mag up so as he(the driver) can glance at the page, young “Bender” urgently ask’s the following question----"Is it these glasses or has that been “hit by an axe” ".“Bender” you have definitley got a thin skin!!!Don’t take it personal!! if you give it you have got to take it,and another thing–don’t whine to me about all the hours you put in for £52 a year!!! As I knew nothing about it I can’t be held responsible for "forced child labour " in Kent! The slave driving (zb) in my opinion! If you had been included officially on the “Bewick payroll” I would have made sure that you would have had a “little” pay packet every week(supported by a time sheet and signed off by U No Hu !!) and it would have been more than £1 I promise. I am sorry and can only apologise for injustices that happened years ago without my knowledge! But I hope you understand that I will always argue my corner and stick up for the “owd firm”,albeit without any malice!! Cheers Dennis.

Yep, you’ve missed out on the hernias, the vibration white finger, the deafness, the tinnitus, the lack of heaters, the running over hours just to save your job (no tachos back then) the bad back from sleeping in a day cab, the fines for overloading, the hours and hours to get anywhere with a motor so underpowered the gear changing was like rowing a boat, the crappy brakes, the pneumonia from roping and sheeting, the broken bones from falling off the top of the load when dragging sheets around etc etc etc…
Hiya must admit never had a hernia but thinking on got the T shirt for the rest. I did charcon for god knows how long and never thought
about the back pain.the ropes in cold weather was fun.
John

I must admit I was getting a bit concerned when I read 'devouring the pages of the latest ■■■■■ mag-----leans across to the driver and holding…
I amazed the drivers would have had time to read such mags, which would make me wonder why they had them in the first place…
I’m just going off line for a while now while I calculate my back pay…

Thank you John, glad to know I wasn’t imagining it.
I moved into transport as a driver just at the tail end of it all, the vehicles were starting to get better, and I remember I left my former employer (known to Dennis)about the time of ‘the great storm’ in October 1987, I was in Brighton having delivered a load of plywood which had been ‘crated’ up with steel bands and scrap ply. Had a big row with the fork lift driver, who wanted me to take all the packing away with me. I asked him if he gave his opened envelopes back to the postman!
Imagine trying to fold my sheets up in that breeze, I ended up just bundling it all up and strapping it down.
Within a week or two I was working with fridges, vans and curtainsiders.

I’ve just had a “butchers” through the “former employees” file and can find no trace of having employed a 12 year old “mate” at G/end!!!

Don’t split hairs!!! I was only trying to make you look better on the thread!! which would have meant you could have claimed to be 49 instead of 51!!! Dennis.

I’ve been thinking about your response today, and I’ve come to the conclusion that you really believe I was upset and that my parents used to beat me for getting grease on my clothes!
That’s very touching, but I don’t think you’re reading my posts how I’m writing them. I like the banter and as a manager of over 140 staff I have to be a little thick skinned (as well as thick!)
I worked for Len willingly, and while the wages were a little on the paltry side I don’t hold anyone responsible for that, besides, it looks like Len (or maybe his butler) is here now, so looks like we’re in for some fun times! Bender

hi bender , started driving in 63 , got the white finger , tinnitus , deafness [ a blessing when her indoors is on the warpath ] bad back , bad knees etc etc , but i made many good and lasting mates over the years , and although the job has gone to hell , those mates are still there . we can still yarn about the good [and bad ] times and brag that we were proper drivers , not cog-swappers and steerers . cheers , dave
Ah yes, but by the same token the guys who drove the Foden and Sentinel steam wagons could also say (if they’re not pushing up daisies) that they were proper drivers, not these softies who climbed into their fully enclosed cabs and turned a key!
And then the guys with horses and carts might argue that they needed more skill than those who had engines, and so it goes.
Camaraderie still exists in waves, doesn’t matter where you work or what you do, there’s just less time spent these days hanging around, because time is money.
They were lucky, those that came before only had hand carts, and wheels hadn’t been invented
No Carl, you are not the only one, wherever I went. I always wanted to go further, we had an old map on the wall in an office/tearoom with our initials next to our recent destinations
A way back there was a night trunk from Ware depot with a change over half way at the same time B R S would also be doing the same trunk, are any of you drivers still about today if so could you please contact 69bill@live.com to talk over and exchange notes on these runs all the best Bill 5
