Get professional help, that’s the only way you’ll stop. No one on here can say anything that will make you stop. All the awful scenarios people have mentioned could happen as a result of your drinking you’ll have thought about a million times before. Go to AA or get other professional help. Also this will sound harsh but don’t fall into the trap of thinking starting a thread on a forum is taking action, it isn’t so don’t use it as an excuse, I.e ‘but I am doing something about it, I asked for help on Trucknet’. I mean this with the best possible intentions

Addiction is a complex issue, so I wouldn’t presume to know why the op drinks. But a common cause of an addiction is escapism often linked to depression. So if that is the case looking for the root cause is possibly the most important thing to start on…

It can be very hard to detect the root cause though as it all becomes one after a while & you don’t alway know why
When you start drinking you don’t intend to become an alcoholic but it can be a gradual build up to that amount so you body becomes used to it & you never think you are drunk many years ago I was drinking a bit more than I should yep I was working etc long story but 1 night decided to stop no not easy not easy for those around me either but they did sort of help & I got throughout it note hardly ever drink & never on a school night 1 reason I started doing nights as I couldn’t drink then
A mate of mine was seeing a young woman she had a young kid moved up to be with him she then started drinking more & more each day she was even hiding the bottles he tried to help her so did a few of us but sadly she passes ages 42 leaving a 13 year old kid
As I have said on here before my gran was killed by a drunk driver many years ago I ws that young I don’t remember her it did devastate the family
The sentence he received at the time was 6 week suspended but as said was a long time ago ( early 1972) so a different outlook on this

Youre both making valid points here I reckon: there may well be an underlying/original cause for the addiction; but once into the cycle of addiction breaking that cause won
t break the addictive behaviour. The addiction must be dealt with, and also any original cause to prevent relapses. I think switchlogic is correct that professional help is best. And as has been said, it`s better to give up driving now, and resume when fit rather than have your licence taken off you.
Often the original cause for drinking or drug taking has long gone anyway but even if it’s still there rectifying it will only help you stay clean when you finally kick the habit. When you get addicted you NEED the drink or drugs just to keep going, that’s what your head tells you.
