MrHappy:
Say no more, if its the Marquee company i’m thinking of then you might as well forget reporting them, you’ve got about as much chance as a pork chop in a synagogue of grassing them up! I shouldn’t worry about it, they would only keep you on for the summer while its busy then its “See you later” at the end of the season. They won’t be worried about tacho’s and hours, during the summer months they will run and run until they get caught or the vehicles break down so your better off out of it. Put this one down to experience and if you want to continue driving for a living then do a bit of research on the rules and regs
Day Two I was told to take a new truck out and to show I was totally green I went back to Foreman and said I can’t get the speedo open for Tacho. Advice for green driver to trucks please.
Haha, this was funny,i can imagine you with a screwdriver trying to prise the speedo open …are you sure your not winding us up ■■?
Just makes the case that the DCPC will be no substitute for common sense.Don’t remember anyone having the same problems when first having to use a tacho after using log books without any classroom bs or asking anyone else.Just as well he has’nt got as far as having to sort out the different cards for a Veeder Root type or Kienzle.

Right so when tachos were first introduced nobody had any problems at all with they’re operation? Seems a bit far fetched to me. Rose tinted spectacles again?

Only telling it as it was.Just like everything else in the job it was’nt a case of no one having any problems it’s just that we all seemed to be able to sort them out a lot easier considering that the technology was new to everyone then including anyone, except maybe the transport manager or workshop fitter, who he would have asked how to use the thing let alone sort out the different types of charts and mode operations and setting the clock etc etc.
The answer then would probably have been your guess is as good as mine but I never saw a tacho on any truck where any one had removed the key to open it .
But having said that when it comes to digi tachos his guess would be as good as mine anyway until I’ve used one.

Hi Carryfast,
That’s possibly because the company you worked for at the time (as from 1st Aug 1980) had taken the option to use the tachograph straight away.
For a while (a year or two?) it was an option to carry on using the old log-book, but if that option was used, there was (IIRC) a 450km limit per day.
The firm I worked for at the time took the option to carry on with log-books, and the tachograph keys were removed. According to the TM, they removed the keys to the office for safe keeping.
I did not think they was still socalled haulage firms like that still out there If they had asked me to do all those things i would have give him his keys back and walked take care and go work for a good firm
arnt there some strange regs re scaffolders
and tacos
the person who drives the truck to site not classed as a driver
maybe in the land of marquees its the same
Can I drive on a Company Tacho ? If the company applies for a Company Tacho can I drive while waiting for that and use a manual Tacho to record driving ?

Dodgy, no you can’t. You must have been issued with a digi card before you can use a digi tacho.

And furthermore Dodgy, you must carry the digi card with you at all times even if you’re driving an analogue tacho vehicle. If you are stopped, they will know if you’ve been issued one and you will be required to produce it along with your paper charts

Oohh, I missed that one - thanks
Amazing what you can pick up on here, when you don’t know everything already
I only found that out when I was pulled by the yellow and black death at Purfleet. It was more luck than judgement that I had my digi card with me at the time so I managed to escape scot free that time. They were clearly impressed with the high standard of my charts
Dodgy are we to assume that you have decided to stay on with this company then? Sounds like they’re feeding you a bit of old ■■■■■■■■ about the digi card to get you to stay on. If you can tell me where abouts in London you are I may be able to point you towards a more professional outfit.
