When I was blown over in Tebay it was on the northbound side at about 6am on the saturday morning Carlisle had massive floods which was 2005 I think.
It was not very windy when I parked up on the Friday night when I ran out of time, but by midnight it started to get bad and it never stopped raining.
I got out of the truck as I could feel the power in the wind trying to force it over and went into the main building to shelter in darkness as there was no power, and minutes later it went over.
The police closed the motorway due to the high winds and traffic was queued up in the services and all the way down the motorway.
As I stood in the services Police cars kept coming in dropping truck drivers off that had been blown over further down the M6.
I eventually got a lift home and counted eighteen vehicles on there sides between Tebay and Gretna plus there was loads south of Tebay judging by the amount of drivers being dropped of in the services by the police.
Carlisle has flooded again!
I was on the M6 just south of Gretna on Friday evening in my car, there was a decker in lane 1. It was leaning so much in the wind I moved into lane 3 to avoid it, it was scary.

Possibly me but i was one of many deckers on m6, i really thought mine was going over especially at shap , i dont know if i was brave or stupid to carry on but ive never seen weather like it and counted my lucky stars to have got home that night. I seen three trucks over and a curtainsider had been sideswiped by a tipper .
A journey i will never forget . Now i have a tale to tell at rdc waiting rooms .
Nab - did anything else get knocked over at Tebay services that night? Good thing you got out in time and could think of worse places to be stranded, but wonder if they adjusted the parking layout since then. Can’t remember exactly where trucks park there, unless it’s still just above the small car park. Did they give free tea & coffee during the power cut? I know we did a few times by boiling pans of water on gas (power cuts aren’t too uncommon there), and free food, unofficially of course.
DieselDog - did the trailer entirely go off the side of the ferry? Sounds like they need to cancel some of the sailings if they can’t strap them down enough for major storms. Am surprised they actually got the ferry to sail at all in those conditions.
Bosshogg - yeah thats the stuff I was thinking of! It washes the sides of the fells, but doesn’t touch the ground or the windscreen unless it’s coming up the motorway. Got my horizontal and vertical mixed up.
Just seen the pics of Carlisle - that looks exactly like 2009 and they said the flood defences would prevent that…hmm. Power even going off in the same places and the same streets under several feet of water, so going to be a horrible time for those people once more.
According to the News & Star, even the M6 at Tebay was only just passable currently due to flooding so it must be seriously lashing it down unless it’s just runoff water. I’d imagine the police, fire service and highways people will be having a very busy night even outside the towns.

If you literally (in the true sense of the word) ’ really thought you were going over’ why the ■■■■ did you not pull in?
I mean, was your load sooo important to risk life or serious injury for?
What was the worst thing that could happen, a night out in a cab presumably with a bunk. What’s the problem?
I have took risk asessments many times over the years. in many crap weather scenarios and carried on, but only if deemed safe.
A long time ago in 40foot single axle foam carriers, or kites as we called them.
If it is particularly bad I pull in end of, no desire to be a ‘hero’ especially one in a wheelchair or worse.
My run to Normanton and back was completely uneventful. No hold ups at all. A66 was open to all. There was a Curries truck in a field on its side and a 7.5t head first into some bushes. Presumably they’ve been there since yesterday. It got a bit windy at Ferrybridge though, and on my way back up, one of Warrens trucks must have got blown off the road and into a field at Weatherby. Luckily still on his wheels though.
■■■■■■■ looked really bad. Nearly every field was submerged. The Eden was well up. Seemed like it was only a few feed from coming onto the M6. Seen fire engines from as far away as Manchester and Birmingham there helping out. Looked really bad. Heard on the radio that all roads in and out of Kendal were cut off by floods. Feel sorry for anyone affected. Always happens so near to Christmas too.[emoji22]

It was a blue trailer travelling north about 3 miles south of
Gretna. Hats off to you if it was, trailer was lurching a fair way.
I stopped everything at 45 southbound on the M6 Friday night to assist the police as they escorted a heavy off dragging the trailer roof which had been blown off by the winds!

The flood defences have helped, otherwise it would have been 5 times worse than 2005!!!
first trip for me this weekend up to carlisle and livingston from the other end of the country, up on friday night, which was bad enough, then coming back saturday night. First time driving in bad weather in a truck too, so me being me thought nothing of it really, passed a couple of tipped trailers made me think otherwise. shap had me gripping the seat with my arse, anyone else see the lunatic trucker doing 60 down it passing cars and trucks about half 7 - 8ish? and the woman in the (i think) micra who was driving for miles with full beams on constantly going southbound, and randomly changing from middle to outside lane, never went into the nearside lane.

Lunatic?? Well mate I was told by an old hand many years ago who pulled foam carriers to keep it lit in strong winds.
I know this aint the official line on things, with ‘Slow down’ signs etc, but it has worked for me since 1979 with various tauts and box trailers over the years, but who knows, maybe I’ve just been lucky.

the trailer was hanging right off the side by the rear dwang…the front one had snapped and the other one must have fell off with the movement, what they do on the birkenhead boat is let you all go on and park like sardines…the ramp goes up so your locked in,then they tell you that sailing will be delayed…they will wait for a few hours to see whats what, then head off anyway,or head off a bit late, and hide from the weather round whatever area of the i.o.m is mildest, then belt for scouseland when they cant hide any longer…they wait till your loaded on so that …1.you cant just pull out the queue and head out over the top on the wire, and 2 so that you cant pull off the boat, and make alternative arrangements to cross stena or p&o.that way they have a captive audience, they get their fees, and you come off the boat at 9,10 or as bad personally as 2pm instead of 6-30 a.m and at that point your still meant to be doing a full days deliveries and bookings.■■■■ up all round.if you do go up to a cabin, then your tannoyed to death so you will get max 4 hours kip assuming your ■■■■■■■,snoring, showering, lavvy flushing cabin buddy dont keep you even more awake, this is after you have ran the gauntlet of ,gays r us with the bar, cafe, deck crew whos aftershave would paralyse you at 50 paces…its an italian/spanish crew for the captain and officers.the loaders are flipflop cabbage munchers, and the gay lot are scousers with a few belfast millies flung in.its designed for lhd trucks so every truck has to park on its blind side, hence its seldom that the pig sails on time.just a boat of abysmal standards all round.
a few sailings later theyre was a big flap because someone hopped off the ferry as it was coming up the Mersey and topped himself. I pointed out to them it was probably a passenger who had previously sailed over and couldn’t face the effort of a breakfast they make on board again.didnt go down too well…

The truck bays where full and I was parked parallel with the services building and the truck bays and ended up on my side against a Willie Betz truck parked along side me.
Lucky for the Willie Betz truck he was not to close , my truck was completely on its side and was just touching his truck which appeared to have no damage and was only preventing him from moving off.
I was the only one blown over in the actual services .
I did get a free breakfast as food was on hot plates and it was just going to go cold if they did not get rid of it.
i dont think I would like to see my truck disappearing off the side of a ferry though!
