Short sighted , but I guess he thinks he’ll get first call on future work, maybe
. For certain though he wont get offered work by other local companies, which in the long run may lose him m ore than he gains

It can be a hard call though. If you were working as a subbie on a contract and knew that the main contractor did SFA and just creamed 10% off the top for a couple of phone calls - wouldn’t you be tempted?

This isn’t rocket science is it, if I was using a haulier that was constantly using (the same subbie) or even a couple of regular subbies and those said subbies where providing a good and reliable service to Ireland or wherever, I would not be long in testing the water to see what these subbies would do the job for themselves, hence as they say the World going round, or there’s no friends in business, take your pick.
You will also find that any haulier that knows his stuff will ‘cream’ a bit off his rate before he takes the 10% so in real terms he’s probably taken 12/15% !
This is why the industry is in the state it is, someone always has to undercut someone else. This has gone on since road transport started and always will. That is why contracts change hands so often and why so many businesses go to the wall. The same applies in other industries, builders are another example.

Seen in another way a shipping agent offered me a fairly silly rate recently to do a collection in an area with fairly poor backloads but in his conversation he let it know he has 3 daily loads from the area back to mine As I knew I had some well paying work to the area in a couple of weeks I took it on the basis of he will offer me a similar rate in a couple of weeks when i need it

Two points, this time it is £130 what will it be next time £120 and will you accept that and if you do, where does it end? The other point is “He let you think he has regular work from the area”, is that true or is that to let you think he has and get a more favourale rate.

Your right transport is a lottery and a bit of a drug ie get hooked on low rates and its hard to get off, I remember a subbie I had who knicked some work I had with CCC when I first started about 10 years ago at the time I was getting £1.10 a mile and he went in at £1.05 I walked away more indisgust with CCC for the way they just dropped me. The thing was at the time i was paid by bacs at the end of the month within 5 days where as he went on a new arrangement of 30 days end of month - he was finished within 8 months
The other example is quite the norm the shiper actually its a clearing house and shipping co has 3 loads a day they neeed to ship as they have no warehouse and the products go into supermarket rdc at prebooked slots therefore I would rather be first in queue than being offered real crap and end going in the wrong direction. I done a collection last week in Friberg for Dartford (in SE based) and theres a driver loading next to me (works for a firm from Northampton) who was loading for Bristol

Customers arent stupid though, they see what
s going off, they will cut you out, without blinking an eye
I only subbed work out, when it came via our yard, so the customer never saw what was going off
