The old chap in question actually came from Manchester. He had married a local girl and as you say never went home.Nice guy.I remember taking him some Capstan Full Strength. He said that they were the only thing he missed from home.

As I have said before Charlie your memory is unrivalled.
Do I remember that you and Ginger Ainsley both started your driving careers with ■■■■ Hampton at Bentley or am I getting confused.
Also do you remember Jim Moody who used to M/E for Mays and if so is he still alive

Yes you are getting a little confused Ian.I started work in’53 as a trailer boy on the BRS In '57 joined the Raf Came out in’60. Drove for Crosby Doors at Farnham for two years and then went to ■■■■ Hampton Motto was "Dig deep for ■■■■ and throw well back!"Then went to Mays Motors where I met you. When I first met you I thought to myself “Who cuts his hair? Must be the council” ( Only joking mate  ) Have not heard any news about Jim Moody for sometime.I’ve got a mate who lives close and he thinks he’s moved.Maybe back to Grimsby? Still trying to find out anything about John Hill.Quiet there as well.A really nice guy.

Hi All, Does anyone know the whereabouts of John Carter.

regards kev

What? Billy Cotton?

No thats John Philips, John Carter pulled for Rawlings around 1987/1988

I was with Rawlings around that time but I cant bring to mind John Carter.
What kind of motor did he have or any more clues please

John Carter.Didn’t he make tents and tarpaulins in Basingstoke? Or maybe I’m going senile

Charlie, no that chap was Mark Key
Regards Richard

there was a john carter around that time i think he bought ian elkins old scania and was going to take over the haulage world and worked for every body doing traction?

I think the John Carter you are on about did some driving for Mark Compton, I believe previous to that he had a successful haulage business in Poole and did a lot of campervan/caravan bodies(I think) to Europe, I have a feeling that he allegedly fell from grace over a missing load of copper or something like that and consequentally had a holiday with HMP,

I hopefully will see Pat Scorey on Thursday (he has missed last 2 weeks with a chest infection) and he may be able to shed more light on this subject!

Regards Pat

Yes it is starting to unfold before my very eyes Slatey.

Thanks Charlie & Ian,
Just remembering a good night in the Routiers near Macon, where the Barbour lads stopped, load of us in there, having a sing song, The Northern Lights,You’ll never walk alone etc.etc. the Patron and his wife gone to bed left us the keys to lock up ! Big Derek (RIP) was driving Brain Damage’s Scania for some reason, just got into bed when he bangs on the cab, "How do you unlock a Scania door, out of bed unlock it for him, back to bed, bang on the cab again ! Richard I’ve dropped my false teeth in the car park,Angela & I spend the next half hour looking for them !! next thing Barry Stafford is knocking on the door, it’s 6am come on get up, he’s got a glass of “Macon Tea”
in his hand. :open_mouth: :open_mouth:
Happy Days
Regards Richard

I find it very difficult to be beleive that this kind of behaviour ever actually happenend are you sure you are not getting confused after all the Rawlings family came from solid methodist stock and I find it hard to imagine that they would have employed anyone who had the slightest leaning to any kind of demon drink.
Which one shall I use confused or mad I think the later
