a nights shunting

cooper1203:
Last night i was required to do some shunting. It has lead to some quiestions as mainly apart from being crap at reversing i was taking too long hooking up and uncoupeling.

1 as i wasnt on the road should i of done a vehicle check

Yes. Oil, fuel, coolant, tyres, lights.

2 should i of used my tacho

Not legal requirement to but you need to record the time working out of scope on your digicard under the new rules anyway so might as well use one if it’s fitted to the vehicle. Saves making loads of manual entries later on.

3 should i of been using all the suzies and aux lines

Both brakes and primary electrics, no need for secondary or ABS. Takes a long time to stop even at low speeds with a heavily loaded trailer with just the red line hooked up.

I did all these things but it caused quite a few issues when it came to my break times for wtd etc

Why? You should easily be able to keep to WTD breaks when shunting.

and i noticed that when i went to untwist the collar to take off the airline several times if i hadnt had a firm grip on it it would of flown off and smacked me in the face.

That happens on normal units when unhooking trailers too. Some will be like that, others won’t.
