A different view on Christmas working

If that’s what you want what’s stopping you?

Before the wtd came in I went on to a 4 day week, my choice, someone else did the other 3 days on the truck. We both could’ve done 5/6 days at that firm if we wanted. My mum does a job share week on week off.

What stops me is having to pay my mortgage. I’ve considered asking my employers if they’ll let me drop down to three or four nights a week, but I doubt they would. (What’s in it for them?) The big change will come when we sell the house and buy either a camper van or a narrowboat to live in. Then we won’t have a mortgage and will be able to work considerably fewer hours. But at the moment, I need the money.

whilst I fully agree with your principles I don’t think your stance will work out well for you or your family, sure you will have more leisure time but no money to enjoy it after you have been replaced by migrant labour :unamused:

I take your point, but I’ve managed to find myself a job where I can work six or seven hours a night for a reasonable wage, with a company which shuts its doors at Christmas time and doesn’t run weekends. Sure, I could earn more by working for Dentressangle up the road (probably) but I prefer earning less and having more free time. With any luck, I won’t have a mortgage in a few years and I’ll be able to sort of drop out a bit, working only as and when I need money. They can replace me with migrant labour whenever they like: just means I’ll sell the house a bit sooner and buy my narrowboat. Basically, if what it takes for me to keep my job is that I have to agree to work any day there is, I don’t want it any more.
