A day in a garage

Hello fellows lorry drivers. Just a quick question and a couple of views… Now we all know that modern lorrys make life easy. So do you think its a good idea to head down t the local lorry dealer and ask them would it be possible to have a day on the spanners with on of their lads… I know sweet fa bout mending one nd only know the very basics. Ya reckon health and safety would put a stop to my learning more…all views welcomed.

stay well clear

it’s a different language they speak :unamused:

We dont need to know how to fix them. Thats what the mechanics or diagnostic laptop operators get paid for.

No offence meant, just our daf garage cannot repair stuff just replace it new.
in my dads garage we used to make a tool for a job if we didnt have one.

I would like a day in the workshop to be part of the DCPC At least it could be useful.

Would you not like a little knowledge, just to get you out of the predicament or get you home?

Change a bulb or check the oil… no chance, I am a driver ffs

I think that’s a hellish idea.
Send me a driver every day for ‘workshop experience’.

Obviously, the apprentice will be a higher priority if there’s any interesting jobs to learn on, after all, he’s the long-term prospect.

So what jobs would the driver get?

Start off by washing a low loader for test, then maybe help board a trailer floor, cut and paint up some marker boards, knock up some ‘emergency’ trailer plates (blank yellow squares for when drivers lose theirs), then finish the day washing off another trailer for test, sweeping up, taking the bins out to burn.

Hows that sound?

nope ,most drivers today work for firms where by it’s frowned on or banned from even changing a bulb.
in my early days :unamused: (yawn) we did it all cept the full service, but as with sat nav/mobile phones.sar tracking etc etc it’s not what the company employ you to do. and who betide if you do anything like that cos H&S bods get involved.
just do your job ,nothing more nothing less, you will not be thought any beeter,or even worse if you deviate.

no in the ral world ,
I would much prefer to work for a family firm than any BIG firm,
why■■?
cos generally the pay may be less but your treated better

Like knowing how to wind a brake chamber off?

It’s a good idea in theory, driver having some mechanical knowledge, but in today’s stupid health and safety world, it would never happen.
If you do a job you’re not qualified to do, and something goes badly wrong, you’ll end up in prison.
Not only you, but with the new corporate manslaughter laws, your gaffer and the company owner will also get prison.

On top of that, it’s unlikely you as a driver will be given a tool barrow to cart around in your unit, and what can you actually fix with no tools?

No no no no nooooooo…Your apprentice is to go out and drive the wagon but he’s not allowed to fix it if anything goes wrong.

I wonder how many drivers actually know how an anchor lock actually works?

Or what a 4 way protection valve is?

Indeed and brake chambers may come into it but as getz and yourself have said the H&S side has put a lot of people off being the resourceful and independant drivers who could be left alone and expected to get things done.
I still think though that a basics mechanical knowledge is no bad thing in any driver…And you Cieranc are the nominated spanner

Anchor lock…No idea and all I know about a 4 way valve is that eventually the buggers will leak.

Spill about anchor locks then if you will be so kind.

Fitters:
we’ll wait for it to develop.
Its not pulling on the left for me.
Thats normal for the ABS warning to be on, it just means its not working.
I’ll just back the actuators off, that’ll get you back, just go easy.
How are you turning the key? No you need to do it slower.
It goes on break when you switch the ignition off as its a ‘saftey feature’.

I wonder how many “fitters” really do :unamused:

My personal favourite is

" You big girl. You defected it for that? Man up."

I would like a bit more knowledge, but most faults and breakdowns are electrical related now. So without a laptop plugged into the OBD, you probably wouldn’t know where to begin looking. Best left to the experts.
