A close shave !

I did it once whilst working in Belgium. In the yard one evening getting set up for the next day, the fleet engineer, transport manager and one of the bosses from Holland were chatting away when the Engelsman backed under his trailer. The Dutch and Belgians don’t tend to do a tug test like we do, so as I backed under slowly with that satisfying clunk, a little forward tug, they all turned to watch. I climbed out of the cab backwards as we know we should and stepped onto the cat walk. I connected my water heaters, my hydraulic hoses and electrical lines, then connected my service airline, finally it was the emergency airline, as soon as I connected the palm coupling the entourage started to slowly disappear from sight and I thought, that’s odd! I realised that I was moving down the slight slope we had in our well surfaced yard. I pulled off the red line and came to an abrupt halt. I couldn’t have made it look like I had meant to do it any better and smiled at the fleet engineer.

It taught me three things.

A. Check Handbrake.
B. Take your Time and don’t be rushed or disturbed.
C. Don’t Panic and smile.
