Can your mrs run her business from your truck if she goes with you ?If she can, you’re much more likely to stay together than if you aren’t around much I would say.
Really?
well certainly enough points, both for, and against.
really is a horses for courses i think.
i’ve been doing a night job for a year. came off of the euro job i really liked, to deal with some family stuff.
the night job has been fine, easy life most of the time, quiet roads, and i find alot of the staff at delivery points abit more chilled of a night. money was o.k, but it wasn’t really what i wanted.
so now all the stuff at home is sorted, i’m off back to the euro job, start in 3 weeks. quite abit of time away, certainly wouldn’t suit everyone, but as stated, horses for courses.
good luck with your decision.
Go for the Euro work. It’s obvious from your post that that’s what you want to do. It may help your relationship at first if you do the nights, but as soon as you get bored, you will resent her for it.
Can you not vary the night shunting around a bit with other night drivers ? Otherwise it would soon become rather tiresome I think. With no kids and your Mrs working for herself she could accompany you on some overseas trips. I’ve gotta say it’s a toughie.
The way i see it is you either love your wife and want to be with her or you dont and want to be away
alot of you get bored easily don’t you?
I go from Northampton to Felixstowe for a container change once, sometimes twice, occasionally 3 times a week. 8 hr day, job done!!!
My dream job would be do that every working day!!!
Personally I wouldn’t even need to think about it, the Euro job every time even if it paid less (provided it paid enough). I think being happy in what you do is a major consideration, for me at least and as for spending more time with ones partner, well both myself and the delightful Mrs Monk find that as the old saying has it, “less is more”.
i used to work away for 6 months at a time from the mid eighties to the early nineties,3 months at a time through the nineties, week away and home for weekends up until 5 years ago and 4 on/off for the last 5 years.{ not all truck driving } ive been with the girlfriend for 24 years and brought up two teenagers and now a six year old and were rock solid…my point is,like harry monk, less is more…mind you,im not saying its for everyone,a pal of mine retired from tramping all his life and him and his wife took a long time to adjust to him being home all the time," will you get from under my feet",was often bellowed…

The watford job will save your marriageWife or a truck its your call
been there and done that, missus left me and the kids coz ‘’ i work too many hours doing nights ‘’
Euro tramping isnt for eveyone, and more relationships have gone bad because of it, i was single when i did it but still missed my social life at home, the money wasnt mind blowing either , its even worse nowadays, also done plenty of night trunking not exiting but piece off ■■■■…and i know how you feel about having your own motor, home from home all your comforts etc, night trunk i just checked it over get in and drive collect at the end of the week …enjoy my time off…too many drivers get a hard on if offered euro work its not big its not clever its a truck , plenty chuck it in after there first stint ! but good luck matey …shytalk,
Thanks lads, you all raise some really good points and this is why I put this up, the wife and I are rock solid and she is use to me being away mon-fri since we’ve been together and my stint at GBA were I was away 2-3 week a time.
She wouldn’t be able to come as her business is a small beauty saloon so pretty much hands on.
All my thinking is I’m not getting any younger and need to do a bit more Europe and hopefully beyond and get it out my system otherwise I’ll end up kicking my self in the ■■■■ for the rest of my life.
The wife told me if I wanna do euro to go for it and she’ll be fine but as we know gents what women say sometimes is not always what they want
Thanks again for all your input, really is a help.
You were really just looking for people to say “Do the euro job”, so here you go, do the euro job.
It sounds like you’re used to it, she’s used to it, you both rub along together well and your relationship is strong but each have your own interests, I’m sure running a small beauty salon is as big a pre-occupation to her as driving over the Alps etc would be to you.
Personally I just couldn’t shunt supermarket trailers on the night shift. That’s not knocking anyone who does, I just could not do it myself, it would drive me even more mental, even for £1,000 a week.
Do the Euro job. That’s an order.

If your earning the same money either way I’d say come home every day and see the wife …
Work to live don’t live to work…
+1
I realise you have to make your own mind up but I certainy wouldn’t be away from home if I could find a job and be home in my own bed every night. You can’t get one minute of all that time away back. That’s my take on it.

I’m in pretty much the same situation M8, when i left the firm you and i both worked for i fell lucky with the new job, it’s interesting work, always varied and the money is ok, i’ve been offered euro work, away 3-4 weeks at a time, one part of me would love to do it, but i know how easy it is to slip into the lifestyle and before you know it there’s nothing to come home to!
but saying that if it was a night trunk job or the euro work i’d be on that train quick as a shot!!!
That Euro bollox is vastly over rated .Who wants to sit in some crap hole for a night when you got a warm ■■■■■ at home.
■■■■ that !
Unless your queer that is!
Exactly!!
Life is what you make it.
I did 7 years in the Army( left in 1991), I enjoyed it but would I want to be there now? No.
I did the Euro work from 1995 until 2001 and I enjoyed that but while it was good in its time, I couldn’t be bothered with it now, sleeping in laybys( worried about getting gassed) & all the other negatives.
When you’re weekended & chewing the fat with other drivers, you hear the same conversations, " I’ve never seen my kids grow up"
" If I could get a job at home, I’d be off like a shot!"
Yeah, yeah, whatever!
You say you’ve done the Euro thing, leave it where it is, in the past with fond memories.
Your time together is precious. None of us are getting any younger.
I’d take the shunting job and keep looking for something better.
Good luck.

another well thought out, informative post, well done.
for a knob, you are quite amusing.
Thanks again for your thoughts fellas, all good and valid points(Bking hmmm, well we know him all to well, bless)
Start on Euro work this Sunday, funnily enough neither of the 2 jobs came about but I can’t sit here doing nothing so I’ve taken a chancer, so gonna ■■■■ it and see.
I will give an honest review after a few weeks of what they are like but won’t fall in to the trap of slagging off if all is ■■■■, I’ll button my lip and move on and that’s all you’ll need to know if they are any good or not.
I’ll put some pics up on the truck pic page next week.
Thanks again.
