700 hp volvo

Then I’m proudly not a proper driver. Old heaps. Give me a beautiful swede over a frumpy northerner any day.

Rob nobby Gassor:
I expect most drivers of today would blow the gearboxes or clutches to bits

Yeah, you can’t beat a Foden or ERF for build quality eh? :unamused:

Yeah as anyone who has spent time trying to shut the doors on an old one will testify. Had the passenger door flyopen despite been locked with the key one day going round parliament square

I think the OP was making a point that if you buy the smaller engine then you could afford to get all the extras which should come as standard on the 700.

I’m not trying to be pedantic here, but why should Volvo tick half the options list for you when you buy a high power truck? Many of the options may not be applicable to the type of work the truck is on, and so would be a waste of resources.

Incidentally Scania do the same thing! Order a basic R730 from the factory and it comes with seats, steeering wheel, grey plastic bumpers a stonking engine and not much else (and the price is still well north of 6 figures). If you want any of the goodies you need to pay for them!

One thing that comes to mind is that trains run on steel wheels, less drag.

They don’t go up hills neither.

LOL, you reckon?? You come out with me one night with my mate who drives em and does a 1800 ton of sand job twice aweek from Truro to Bristol!! See and hear a 128 ton 3300 horsepower freight loco down to 25mph over some of the south Devon banks!
Anyway, way off topic here, sorry.

What a strange engine they have, noisier on tick over than when on full power.

Yeah, that be the one. I went out with him one night, a year ago, pretty impressive watching that thing haul 8 wagons of sand at 77’000KG gross each up around the 1.37 of Dainton near Newton Abbott.
Plenty of hills on the railway.

Jammy bugger!!!
I’d give my right knacker to have a cab ride on one.

Yeah, its an eye opener alrite, especialy when it came to controlling near to 800 tons of push in your backside coming down the other side! :open_mouth:
Dont think i could stick it for 12 hours though, those things are dam noisy in the cab at full bore. Pluss everything these guys do is recorded on a “black box” type device, even throttle position or if he operates the bloody windscreen wiper!

But you can get away with it when it’s all tax free diesel and the big business lot in government have covinced everyone that it’s all a different type of emmissions and CO2 when it’s put out by trains instead of trucks. :smiling_imp:
