60mph speed limit proposal for stretch of M1 motorway

limeyphil,

The same amount of co2 will be produced in 32 minutes as it would have been in 27 minutes and 42 seconds at 70mph, So it’s a money making scam.

It doesn’t actually work like that and, annoyingly, if people did stick to the 60 MPH limit, emissions would indeed be reduced.

Not necessarily…

Cars are at their most efficient in top gear, around 2-2500rpm and some vehicles will need one gear lower than at 70mph, to do 60mph.

So any gains will be lost…in fact such vehicles may well pollute more…

In addition, cameras will be put up, and all the donkeys will hit the brakes slowing all the traffic down, which will then speed up…

All it will do is give the authorities chance to catch more speeding motorists and cause tailbacks.

That’s what its all about though.isnt it?
regards dave.

:unamused: Funny how fuel consumption is measured in Miles per gallon not Minutes per gallon, if you go faster you will inevitably use more fuel because you are using more energy pushing air out of the way at a higher rate.

However this is nothing to do with pollution, its nothing more than a scam to get money out of the tens of thousands of drivers that will inevitably not slow down just because the speed limit has been changed.

well since most trucks are gov at 55 it aint gonna make much difference to the truck driver is it

It will cause more problems than it solves really

For those that know the A1 just North of Washington services there is a 50mph speed limit along to the Blaydon bridge this has caused to more congestion more frustration no fewer accidents more hold ups especially in rush hour can take upto 1.5 hrs to go along that stretch

Think it is a bad idea as cars often do 40-45 in outside lane even though they can move over into inside

There are now often the speed camera vans out
