50 mph

Trailers we pull are only 3.9mtrs high so cab air deflectors are spot on and close cupald trailers so very little gap

But by dropping speed by 3 to 4 kph we have saved money

We havent been late for any deliveries, and we havent lost any earnings on trucks so for me it worked  :open_mouth:

It would be nice if we didn’t have to bother trying to save every penny just to stand still, but that at the moment is what it’s about .

CRACK ON

SLOWLY

sitting at 50 through roadworks on the motorway my MAN auto changes up and down from 12 to 11 and back every 20 to 30 seconds…that cant be very feul effecient?
i do hold it in 11 manually…but some supermarket trucks have the manual function disabled i hear?

Big Joe:
Taking notice of the wind direction makes more difference, the only time backing off a few kims makes sense is when running smack into a head wind, when its behind me whether its nailed to the floor or pegged back the difference on the trip computer is negligible, dunno why we don’t have more wind socks alongside major roads like they do in france, then drivers could be drivers and make the decision themselves, rather than just be someone who points the truck in the right direction.
Good question, why do they have wind socks alongside M ways in france?.

Wind socks? You having a laugh, even when it says don’t cross a bridge because of high winds the majority appear to ignore it and carry on over the bridge exactly as they where, you expect them to back off in a head wind?!!!
I myself take notice of the wind though, you’ll always see me with my thumb out the window checking. Sometimes when i have to go to Leeds if its blowing into me i head off down south along the M6 and maybe try the A50 across or summat

JOBE:
I do drive the trucks most weekends to collect trailers for my drivers so they can have ther time off at weekends

This is very good of you. I can tell you are old school letting drivers off at the weekend !!

What about the MPG at 60mph

SCANNYFROG:
I work for TM (tight management) Logistics and were having our trucks turned down to 50 mph. I had mine done this week and today it added an extra 90 minutes onto my total journey time but its going to save the company fuel money because the management say so. I cant see it as the overtime and nights out are going to go up but what do I know. Its also bugered up my gearing as the truck hunts when in top gear so when it decides to breakdown or up thats another extra cost. This might sound bitter but on a serious note I almost got rear ended by 2 wagons on the motorway who obviously thought I was going a lot faster and had to pull out pretty quickly. Something else I noticed was going up hills took ages as I didnt have the extra few mph to pull me up and where I would have been in 10th gear it was dropping down to 8th so would surely use more fuel. Does anyone else run at this [zb] speed and if so how do you get on with it? Appologys to all that get stuck behind me in the slow lane.

We get on ok with our auto Mercs. They don’t hunt in top gear they just cruise. In fact at 50mph the rev counter needle sits in the middle of the green at 13000 rpm, at 55 it sits just above the green at 15000rpm. Gaffer reckons they do just over 1mpg extra.
Are you sure you’re actually doing 50mph? I doubt this because i’ve never had anyone almost rearend me or pull out sharply because they thought i was going faster than i was. After all if they are only roughly 5 mph faster its hardly a breathtaking advance.

Have you a 12 or 16 speed Mike?

ellies dad:
Have you a 12 or 16 speed Mike?

Not counting the splits it says 8 on the dash. So 16 speed?

I’ve been runnin at 50 now for the last 2 weeks. Not sure on the savings yet but less wear and tear on me!!!

My own is 12,say’s 1300rpm flat out.11th gear at same speed is 1550rpm.

60 mph takes ours to 17000 rpm, so i believe !!

TONYB I dont want to say which depot as you know Taylors there be dragging me in over the coals and in the contract it says any bad mouthing the company is instant dismissal which is a bit like breathing in the wrong direction with them. Today I`ve struggled to get back tonight because of the extra time its added to the journey it does make a difference a big difference whatever anyone says. We were told weve got to adjust our driving style but from what I see and talking to some other TM drivers its the planners who need to change there style as you wont get the same ammount of work done but I doubt anything will change.

Must just be me then  :grimacing:

Yer big girls blouse, whats wrong with slip streaming/tail gating like what a proper trucker would do, don’t suppose you’ve got any tattos or spotlights either :grimacing:

The Volvo FH 480 with i-shift that i drive will sit right in the middle of the green band at 40mph in 10th…maybe it should be restricted to that because then it will save having to use that extra fuel to accelerate to 50?

Or maybe down to 30 in 8th?

I actually find it more stressful being limited to 52 indicated (50 in actual speed) unless i am driving on roads with little or no traffic…take the A34…how many times do i have to back off when going uphill because i know i haven’t got enough room to get round the truck in front who is doing 48 before we reach the top of the incline and he quickly leaves me stranded in lane 2?

If it is really saving companies lots of money then i can understand why they do it, but are we going to see the benefits of that money saved…i doubt it very much.

In fact, we have just been told that any driver who isn’t achieving the expected mpg will undergo ā€œretrainingā€ and after that, if they still fail to achieve they will be disciplined!
My truck, on a normal weeks work of distance, will achieve 8.6/8.7 mpg, this week i have been on locals all week and am returning 7.5 mpg…i know the company expect 8-9 mpg from their trucks…so because they have changed my type of work, i am possibly looking at ā€œretrainingā€?

Most of you get paid on the hour, 52 mph all day as opposed to 56 mph ads at most half an hour on your day, compare this to fuel consumption tyre wear brakes etc and everyones a winner, i have an excellent view from my cab which i like to enjoy this cannot be done when you drive like a bank robber (owenswilkinsonsroyalmailwisemans) Perfectly summed up on a previous post ONLY A FOOL RUSHES TO STOP.

It gets there when it gets there!

Hi.
I can’t see it as bad mouthing.Your’e just concerned a bout getting your given work done in a day.
We have 3 nightmen that go to selby. When i go i struggle to do it in 4 hours, and thats in a 56mph motor,so at 52 i’d be struggling if i got held up.Luckily i’m shunting so i don’t have that problem.
Do you ever get down to shobdon?

But that isn’t the drivers fault if you cannot make the delivery. The drivers records benefits the driver too. If the planning is so tight that 4mph makes all the difference between getting tipped or not then Taylors of Martley need to look at the planners.

Yes you will, you’ll still have a job in a few years time because your company has cut its costs, rather than plodding on and making a loss. You need to look at it from both sides not just from behind the wheel. Just think 1 mpg better on 7mpg is over 12% fuel saving, its in there’s and your interest to cut costs and keep the company profitable.

I’m all hart i let some have christmas day off aswell
