50 mph

nothings changed since the increase in limits.
same people going the same speeds as before, legal and above, car and lorry drivers.
no more or less skidmarks on the roads.
same numptys on the roads expecting that flashing their headlights at drivers in front will do anything other than annoy the living ■■■■ out of other drivers.

You know what the official word on how to deal with aggressive drivers is? It’s something like slow your own speed down to where you are comfortable, pull over if necessary to allow overtaking, so at best they pull over, not so good they slow down, you still cant overtake in your multi-ton snail, at worst they slam on the anchors, you rear end them and then have to explain to the local plod why you dazzled them with your headlights whilst driving up their arse causing them to lose control and brake suddenly, and then have vosa/dot go through your drving time records and pick up every little infringement whilst they’re at it even if you werent at fault.

for the record I was not sitting on his back,i was doing 50 AS I STATED he pulled out of a side turning ahead of me and proceeded to drive at around 45 to 50 I soon caught up as you would if you were doing 50 then had to decelerate to avoid getting too close I was then at a safe distance i was then forced to do around 35 to 40 mph when this muppet could have gone to the national speed limit and left me standing but chose not to,so at a SAFE DISTANCE [i had to make the letters big so you could understand them]i then flashed my lights out of annoyance so had he have applied his brakes i would be able to stop in time [is that clear enough]numpty

Yeah, i’m sure thats great, everyone knows flashing your lights at the car in front is a perfectly acceptable way of communicating, nothing unprofessional about it at all. I’m not saying I’m a perfect driver but I wouldn’t go bragging about how I act in certain situations, like posting about how you flash someone going too slow for your own preference. How do you feel about that tipper driver overtaking the wrong way on the roundabout, suppose if he’d been stuck behind it for a few miles at 40 instead of 50 he was totally justified eh?

Will try to remember the next time I’m being followed closely by some irate trucker that I must drive faster because HE wants me to, not because I want to ! cos big butch truckers own the road (and try to intimidate car drivers with their size)

You have to play it subtly.
Flashing your lights at the bloke in front is the best applicator of brakes known to man, ditto and worse is tailgating…do both on a proper job and a complaint goes in with video evidence and you’ll be looking for another job in very short order.

If you do find a numpty out to mess you about but refuse to get annoyed and keep your distance it gets to them even if they are so inclined as to hold you up, they can’t upset you if you keep that distance no matter how slow they go, eventually they get thoroughly cheesed off at trying to drive ever slower and despite getting down to 10mph or walking pace at a junction that could be taken at 30, if you’re still 100 yards behind the annoyance will backfire onto them, trust me on this.

I suspect most people not associated with lorries (and most of those hating the things, understandably) haven’t got a clue about the speed limits increasing, seeing as most car speedos overread by around 5/10%, your 50mph may well be 55mph on their speedo, if you’re filling their mirror at that speed you will get their backs up.

I wasn’t aware that 50 was now a minimum speed, when was that added to the order.

april the 6th it started

I think you’ll find that 50mph as a minimum hasn’t started, it’s a maximum.

If you can’t overtake safely then you travel at the speed of the vehicle(s) in front, it’s as simple as that. Not everyone WANTS or needs to travel at the National Speed Limit, if your runs are timed that tightly that you have to drive to the limit all day then jack it in as it isn’t worth the personal stress involved! Chill out and enjoy the scenery, live longer and prosper…

Pete.

I think the A to your Q is yes, you are paranoid. So far I haven’t come across any car drivers trying to slow me down. Been stuck behind plenty lorries though, not sure if they’re ignorant of the law change, hanging the job out, or just plain dumb but, so far, it’s lorries only I’m afraid.
What I find odd are the comments regarding car drivers being a bit dumb, like you don’t drive your car to & from work!

:open_mouth: I reckon that just about says it all :unamused:

It does make me angry, it is a maximum limit of 50. not a mandatory limit . You must drive UNDER 50 to be safe and legal .
Whilst I’m having a rant , What has happened to truck indicators, Have the manufactures forgotten to incorporate them into trucks lately !!.
Or is it the same bulshy drivers not using them . :smiling_imp:
Rant over, stay safe and cool…

Why?

When in your car and someone overtakes because you’re under the limit, do you do the elderly driver thing and shake your head from side to side?
If anything the 50 limit is highlighting a large number of car drivers who haven’t the confidence or mental capacity to drive at what is a relatively slow speed in good conditions.
Reminds me of the old defence of elderly drivers “their reaction times are much slower.” Sorry they shouldn’t be driving then.

strange if you think that’s bragging ,I was explaining for the post I put, hardly bragging, and ref the tipper driver I understand the police are looking into it and he has been sacked and rightly so

my mistake when you put the minimum speed obviously I meant maximum for hgvs when I put the date

When I am in my car I try and drive as close to the limit as is safe but that speed is never fast enough for the car behind. The BMW, Audi, VW aimers think that they are exempt from speed limits and do whatever speed they like.

In the days of 40mph for lorries why was there invariably a queue of lorries behind a Tesco/Asda lorry? If everyone was driving at the correct speed then they wouldn’t catch up with them, just a thought?

I am inclined to agree. You would not pass a driving test if you cannot drive within a reasonable speed of the road speed limit. Why do some people find it justifiable that someone may choose to drive at 35 in a car whilst on a 50 mph DC. Frustrates all around. Do it during a driving test and you would fail. if you cannot drive a car within a reasonable percentage of the speed limit then you should hang up your driving gloves.

This thread makes me feel old, back in me youff I was struggling to keep below the speed target now I struggle to get up to it, never flashed a car in front to go faster though thats just weird.

Because they were ■■■■■■■ about doing 36mph maximum on perfectly good roads.

Gave a car a few flashes the other day on the M1 in the 50mph average speed bit.

Car ahead in lane 1 dawdling along at 40mph, car in front of me indicates, moves out to middle lane. I do the same. She passes the slow car in lane 1, then eases off slightly and just sits in the middle lane with no intention of moving back over.

I left a reasonable gap, wasn’t sat right up her backside. Flash the lights a couple of times and she moved over. As I went passed I glanced over, she was on the phone having what looked like a heated phone call, looked like she was shouting.

I think sometimes I flash will help move someone out of the way, but I don’t like to make a habit of it and still leave a decent stopping distance.

Majority of people I’ve done it to have been on the phone. Same for people who lane hog and get undertaken, usually mid phone call.

Agreed-the ’ phone callers ’ are easy to spot on approach.

Weaving in the lane, gradual loss of speed, sudden steering inputs etc… we have all seen it far too often.

Random braking always a tell tale as well. Every time I’ve seen someone slightly touch their brakes on a clear bit of motorway they’ve been on the phone.

Usually give them a toot, even if it only gets one person off their phone it helps.

As someone who is a retired HGV driver who does around 1600 miles a week in a car I can see this from both sides.I have found that there is not as much overtaking of lorries as there was but I do see a lot of car drivers holding up lorries.Even the Co-op and Asda now do 50 on the A69 but I think the majority of car drivers do not know the speed limit for hgv’ s has changed certainly most of my passengers never knew of the 40mph limit for trucks on single carriageways.
