Biggest advantage is more time to arrange make appointments etc.
Such as making a doctor’s appointment.
Arranging trades men to come service your boiiler etc.
Taking your car for an mot
On Mon to Saturday means trying get it all arranged on Saturdays or taking a days leave in the week to get to said appointment.
I’ve got some health issues that I need 2 days off together if I have a camera down throat as I have sedation
Also my mum is 76 next year and will need a hip op some when
This is the issue I struggled with , hospital / clinic / docs appointments , mon - wed , mon - thurs we’re ok , but mon to
Fri were hopeless , though suddenly doctors will see me on a Saturday , though not my surgery
You shouldn’t be on less money because the hourly rate is increased to compensate for Saturday and Sunday working.
Even still you are working 1.5 days less a week than a Monday to Friday driver. If they are working for less money then more fool them.
Average ten hours a day at £15 a hour will net you 750 before tax on a Mon to Friday. To get the same money on 4 on 4 off you would need to be on over £21 a hour as you are only working 35 hours a week based on the same 10 hour days.
If your tramping mon-fri there’s always out of hours at hospital sat / sun , use them no end , prescriptions etc , though if my memory is correct they can’t refer you to see a specialist , your doctor has to do that

I resisted it for years, worried about weekend working. But honestly, 4/4 is the dogs ■■■■■■■■. Would never go back to a 5 day working week in this game if I can help it. As a day driver I’m far less stressed, enjoy the job more, my attitude is that the office can mess me about as much as they like for the days i’m in, so long as I don’t hear off them for the ■■■■■■■■■■ 6 months off the year i’m off. Plenty of free time to do all the things I want to in life, you can do stuff when the masses are out of the way at work, no worrying about getting to appointments or being in for parcels/tradesmen etc. Never have to use holidays for any of that sort of stuff, use them for weekends on the odd occasion something crops up, book 8 days holiday and you can go away for a fortnight and still have 6 days left on your return.
Rather than start a new topic, just a quick question for the 4 on 4 off guys.
I’m rotad on shift from Friday 23rd to Monday 26th December. Told today that there will likely be no work on Boxing Day aswell as obviously no work Christmas eve & Christmas Day.
Now I know they are under no obligation to pay me if there is no work but they are quite adamant in saying I should work 3 shifts next week to make up for these.
I can’t and won’t do this as we’re away for 4 days after boxing day which has been planned and pre booked months ago.
This was just sprung upon me today, am I being unreasonable in taking my position on this. Just wondered what you guys with more experience think?..

I mentioned it in September when the trip was booked. Only through courtesy that I wouldn’t be available for short term Christmas cover incase of any no shows.
It obviously fell on deaf ears. They are my non work days anyway.
It’s not the money, I’m quite happy to take the days unpaid, I’d take the whole of Christmas period unpaid if I could. Suppose I could have avoided this myself by booking the 24th, 25th & 26th as leave earlier in the year. Just a bit surprised by it as never had an issue before.

It sounds like the only reason they want you to work next week, is so somebody else can have time off. Tell them to ■■■■ off as it’s their problem, not yours.

If they are your non rota working days, they can only ask you to work. If you are paid salary, they have to pay you for your rota days, even if they have no work for you. They cant force you to work extra days next week to make up those days, they have to pay you overtime for that.
If you are paid by the hour, its different, if they dont have any work, they dont HAVE to pay you, but they still cant MAkE you work the extra shifts.

I’ve been doing 4on 4off nights for 8 years. These are the pros and cons I’ve found. It’s an excellent shift pattern for people who deem time more precious than money.
Pros:
4 days off in a row
You work an average of 3.5 shifts every 7 day week, which is about a 40ish hour week.
The money is about the same as mon-fri (in my experience, my 4 on 4 off jobs have been better paid than my mon-fri jobs).
When you book 4 shifts off, you’re actually off for 12 days.
You will work average 162.5 days in a calendar year, so 202.5 days off. (182.5 rota’d off + 20 days holiday). So brilliant work/life balance.
If you like overtime, you can bung in a shift or two per week and still get 2 or 3 days off.
If you’re strategic about using holiday, you can minimise weekend working through the year considerably.
Cons:
4 days on! (I see working for a living as a huge con in this short life).
Your rota will have you working exactly half of the Saturdays and Sundays in a calendar year.
No double time for bank holidays etc.
Christmas and new year rota is always a bit haphazard, and you’ll be expected to save holiday to cover it, which may be quite a few days.
Your time off will sort of clash with the conventional work patterns of those in your social circle (though my social life hasn’t really suffered).
Only 20 days holiday per year (although that’s 20 x 12 hours, which works out the same as 30 x 8 hours - so pro rata you kinda get 30 days).
No premium rates depends on who you work for and what sort of delivery system they operate on. When I did that sort of shift it worked out we got “low” weeks because we effectively doing a normal week shifts. When it came to weeks which included w/e and Bank Holidays we got paid o/t rates which gave us "high "weeks. Down side was you could be rostered for most bank holidays and could be the same the following yea if its a leap year. Good side was booking time off between shifts and trebling your days off

Christmas day and boxing day are Statutory Bank Holidays. One way or another your employers need to pay you for them. Whether you can take your 8 stats in lieu or whether you are paid them at the time.

That really wouldn’t surprise me. I won’t be there anyway lol. Thanks for opinions guys

Jack Richards alough heard there part of tuners now?
There always advertising 4 on 4 off .
Shifts .
Never worked there personally.
I’m sure they used to advertise a 6 on 6 off role on tramping too, if my memory serves me correctly. I’m not sure how I’d feel doing that.
Yes they were . I was half tempted by the fact having 6 days off. Then I thought about it decide no as your 6 days off be unpaid .
Would it not work out the same as 4 on 4 off though ? You would still work the same amount of days per year.

Correct, but the way I worked it out, it looked like too many weekends in a row rota’d on (although I know I’d get an equal number of weeknds off in a row). I did like the idea of booking 6 off but getting 18 off though.
