45 minute break

Who was the bird brain who thought it a good idea to only allow 30 minutes to be part of second period of a 45 break.I liked 20 25 or30 first early on morning or 15 s through out the day…sounds like I am knit picking but I would like to punch him or them

Probably the same person to burden us with WTD, DCPC and other no brainer rules. Our good friends in the EU!!! :imp:

It’s because your second break might be quite a few hours into the day and therefore you are likely to be tired so a longer break is more sensible, that’s my take on it.

it’s to stop you driving best part of 9 hours with only a 15 minute break in the middle.

This was the reason and it has been thus since 2007

It has proved possible under the rules of Regulation (EEC)
No 3820/85 to schedule daily driving periods and breaks
to enable a driver to drive for too long without a full
break, leading to reduced road safety and a deterioration
in the driver’s working conditions. It is therefore
appropriate to ensure that split breaks are so ordered
as to prevent abuse.

The 45 minute break is a minimum, you could still have 25 minutes in a morning for your breakfast and 1/2 an hour or more later in the day for lunch as long as you have them both before reaching 270 minutes at the wheel.

As well as removing the ability to drive 8 hours and 59 minutes with only a 15 minute break it was also to align the tacho and WTD breaks, 15 minutes before 6 hours work for WTD and first part of tacho break.

Thankyou.

3x15 minute breaks used to be great for tipper drivers; You could get 3x15 minutes over 3xloads if a Dinky Toy was loading. A bit naughty I know but I was young and foolish then

remember, you can still do this if your total driving doesn’t reach 4.5 hours

Because he could use the time it took to get loaded three times to squeeze in a 15 minute break but it’s not long enough to get a 30 minute one in. Using the time for loading and break gave him time to get in a fourth load which wouldn’t so easy now with having to stop and take a 30 minute break in addition to the 3x15 minute loading periods.

Because in each of those he was also getting loaded so 3 loads and at the same time 3x15 minute breaks and his breaks are done and enough time left in the day to get a fourth load in.

Nowadays he would still use the 3x15 minutes for the three loads but as only one of them would be any use for a tacho break he would have to take a separate 30 minute break which makes getting a fourth load in much less likely.

A certain firm on National Express work I did a bit for a decade or so ago, used to have you go in early, do a vehicle check, then you’d drive to the fuel pump or the was in the yard, go and have your breakfast (1/2 hr break), then into Manchester, load up passengers, down to London, unload / reload passengers (15 mins break) and you’d either get back or get most of the way back before you needed a break, then, if you couldn’t make it back (very rare tbh), you’d get a driver meet you at Sandbach, Knutsford or on the A556 to finish it for you.

Saved double manning a London run or having a driver sat somewhere waiting.

If you got stuck behind lots of trucks overtaking each other (speed down to mid 50’s instead of 62-65ish) or roadworks, or bad traffic, then you’d not quite make it back. You never put it on break in Manchester because if you recorded 15 mins there, you’d only have 4.5hrs, so you’d put it on break in London.
Basically you did a yard - Manchester - London - Manchester (or as close as possible) without a break - recording only 15 mins in London but you were unloading / loading, so not really a break.

I was over the moon when the rules changed to be honest.

is a 45 minute break still 3/4 of an hour long?

i’ll get me coat.

Ah but the coach firms did always sail close to the wind. Those Skill-ful drivers caused a huge change in the law as regarding duty time and breaks or rest

Thanks I can now see the point, brought in by lunatics for lunatics.being self employed I can do what I wish and have gone back to my old way…30 minutes half eightish, to avoid rush hour traffic then another 30 when required I do like a 30 min early on so I can read paper and get rev up for the day,I would still likevto punch them
