Personally on the rare occasion I have had to I remove airlines and move trailer on shunt button saves airlines.

Back in the 80s/90s after ripping my airlines twice I insisted on reversing onto the ferries on the Felixstowe/Zeebrugge ferries and gained written permission from the port management. The loading officer was dubious at first but after the first couple of sailings when i did it as quickly as others drove on and reversed into position he was fine.It saved me a fortune in air lines and tyres.

Try to avoid whenever possible, you can usually make a three point turn instead which is a lot kinder on the vehicle.

Also practice blind side reversing, money where mouth is i still perform at least one blind side every day at work to keep my hand in.

The other good habit to get into is when you are maneuvering when loaded to transfer the weight off the tractor mid lift or tag axle onto the drive axle, some axles (Daf/MAN to mention two) will lift the axle fully even when loaded if you use the weight transfer button (not the axle lift button which won’t respond when heavy), some other makes will transfer the weight but not actually lift said axle whilst loaded, either way not only will it be easier to turn but you’ll have better grip on the drive axle and cut wear to tractor tyres and suspension components…good to get used to these tricks when the weather is fine because they will come in handy in slippery weather, best to get the hang of doing this and knowing the speed when weight transfer automatically cancels (usually 20mph’ish), utilising these systems can mean you getting up an icy hill or getting grip on a slope rather than going nowhere.

Make sure you have some spare airlines…

Take me down to the ratchet city, where the leads get caught & grease ain’t pretty,
Oh won’t you please take me home… (eventually, after a fitter has turned up & you’re running out of time & patience).

Good advice from yourself and robroy. Practice makes perfect. Never had a problem with blindsides because like you I practiced plenty.
Mind you after an A frame drawbar anything seemed easy.

Engage the shunt button on the trailer , then remove all the lines on the rear of the cab , I do this all the time in turning areas in shopping malls where vans parked to make it worse . It saves ripping them all off .

Off you tube, tight yard easy turn for the driver

If you do it on a ferry, ask them to flood the deck first, it makes it slightly easier on the tyres dragging, and make the lazy sods move the chains first.
