I was parked up by Wickes in Dunstable the other night.
A couple of blokes jumped out of a PL registered truck, judging by the way they were going at each other, I’m guessing even the best working relationships can become very strained at times.
I can’t think of anything worse than spending that much time working with another person in your truck.
Most of my driving use to be double manned, but we never slept in the cab, although some of the hotel rooms wernt much bigger.
I drove/worked with a few “characters” some of whom id rather not drive with again, for different reasons. Nothing worse then waking up to find mateys gone the wrong way. But there were also some top blokes. We were employed to get things as far as possible as quickly as possible, which we always did.
Saying all that, i still prefer to drive on my own, although convoying is the best of both worlds.
i never liked convoys, ours were different companies together for the big runs, more ■■■■■■■■ than a group of women, no planning as to fastest truck at the back slower to front so the convoy stretched over the whole journey instead of a steady run. always my truck needs to at the front, its our job, longest served, knows the way, related to the ■■■■■■ driver, cant stand the fumes, wrong time, me i would sooner be at the back and jog along nicely,
I double man with my self, dont enjoy it much, in the morning we argue about driving the first part of the journey, then where we are going to have lunch, then dinner, top or bottom buck it just goes on all bloody week, then he has the cheek to come home with me, thats when i draw the line

And then arrive somewhere and all sit together and not mix with the other firms drivers
ezydriver:
If I so much as have to nip somebody round the corner to pick up a unit it’s like torture with all the pointless smalltalk and moaning. I wouldn’t last even half a shift double manning as I’m a man of very few words.
Solo is one word, you could have saved a few…
I could double man with the right people but that’s a very small pool to choose from and the job itself would have to have something I was interested in doing on that basis.
we did used to sit together when stopped, that was the fun bit, some accusing others of stealing the job others reminding them they did that to start with, the sights of some of the other drivers, notably the Mohican, the wig cowboy, the drunk, the gods gift, the best, worst, fastest, slowest, highest earner, ex sas, sbs, diver of sea and ■■■■, vicar, judge, they were all here somewhere, and the lady on the dock in kent who would do me fish fingers egg and beans just because I asked nicely,
didn’t mind crewing with the right person but also don’t mind convoy or on my lonesome.
I didn’t have the option to spilt the driving (stupid rule in the usa). so we did 12hr shifts 6am -6pm and my shift was 6pm -6am wasn’t much different to being alone just keep the cds down/cb bit o respect…separate bunks so no hot bedding. food fuel toilets all done at changeover times job was a good un.a lot o miles done at 65mph x 22hrsish
Double manning … I’d rather set fire to my face then put it out with a fork.
No chance .Lorries are far to small for double manning .id never do it .Sorry
