1st timer in an artic!

Hi mate, I notice your from Rochdale, who is it your driving for?

Hi thanks for all the advice guys,

Its been a wacky old month, and I’m pleased to say after spending weeks ‘gettin my head around it’, i’m getting better each day. I’m doing multi drop here, and bloody everywhere. 10+ different places everyday! Great for learning if not a little hair-raising. If anyones been to B & Q in Aintree they’ll know what I mean!

Still not ‘comfortable’ with it, but no longer am I puzzled. Oh and sorry to any truckers stuck behind me in a queue in the following places :- Palletline Brum, several B & Q’s, and the guys at the yard! (Leach Distribution).

The job takes as long as it takes. Once you have passed there is no law on the amount of shunts required.

If folk try rushing you, just make it take a little bit longer. Great for self smugness and the ego knowing you have stuffed someone that is giving you a hard time.

Well you have had all the advice and some of it is as they say, how ever I have been driving artics nearly 40 years, and do you know what, accassionaly I still have to shunt, we all make cockups from time to time, especialy when you are being watched, every truck handles differently, and depending on the trailer single double or triaxle, and the weight will all come into play when manouvering, as you have been told repeatedly take your time, ask if there is some one there to ask or direct, and try not to use the blind side, all the best with it
let us know how you get on, you will probably find that there was nothing to it after all you passed the test.

If you download google earth and type in the address you are delivering to, you can often zoom in to see what you are likely to encounter on the route in and the size of the yard. a lot of the country now has street level shots.

Never gave that a thought, how we have come a long way since double clutching.

if someone is giving you hassle with the old " want me to do that for you son" routine, just say " no thanks im in a hurry today " that usually gets a few giggles from anyone standing around and also makes em shut up sharpish.

im only into the job a few years now and its always a new challenge getting into a new place etc, just ask the door crew for pointers on what other drivers do and look for tyre tracks/blackened marks where other have went in before, also its a good idea to note damage to walls and stationary objects around where you are so you know the problem areas others have encountered before. right at the start i was always told to split reverse and give it enough power to cruise along under its own steam with no more accelerator needed. it helped loads and ment all the trailer movements were at the same speed at pretty much every drop.
its always nice to pull off a tight reverse in one hit, i dont think anyone gets tired of that feeling!!!
good luck

Hi mate,

I’m a newbie myself. I’ve found watching a few things on YouTube quite a big help, to see how Artics manouver, how much steering to put on etc.

try watching this youtube.com/watch?v=0Y_A-dcdRRg to give you some idea

For someone just starting Class 2 training you have no idea how impressive that was to me!

Was this you?
