Well I admire the drivers optimism if not his talent.
It doesn’t matter that the sign is obscured by a tree, the sign on the actual bridge is quite clear.
That sign is just a direction sign, the hight restriction is included in it to aid with choosing a route.
The signs (and other warning markings) on the bridge itself are there to indicate the point where the restriction actually applies.
That would depend on whether he used his arm or his leg to save him from hitting the passenger side door when he was launched from the driving seat.

Any sensible person uses their leg. You can always drive with one leg but the way it rolled, its the left hand side getting it. Imagine losing your left arm. How the hell would you change the radio station? I wouldnt want to run the risk of starting the wagon up and finding out its tuned to classic fm and I cant change it. Id rather risk losing a leg
[/quote]
Or worse that sea monster Feltz. In that case I’d hope my ears had been popped off along with the leg.

it was stated elsewhere that the driver had brain damage serious head injuries, had lost sight in 1 eye,had a artificial leg,and 1 arm cut off at the elbow…ffs,no wonder he crashed, driving about in that condition…

I actually said it tongue in cheek hence the smilie.
How much leeway is there normally? If I’m in a 14’ lorry and there’s a 14’ bridge?

Let’s just say you wouldn’t want to go under it at 30 let alone 50 mph.

You’d be fine, I’ve been under many a bridge which is the the same height as the trailer.
Story in what passes for the local chip paper in Stoke suggests that the driver of the car that the trailer ended up taking a lie down on is also a wagon driver, on his way to work in Nantwich.

If your vehicle measures 14 ft then it is an offence to pass under a height limit which is lower than 14 ft 0 in.

According to the signs manual, they first measure the bridge, reduce that measurement by 3" then round down to the nearest 3" increment. So presumably a bridge marked as 14’ should be somewhere between 14 ‘3" & 14’ 6"
I wouldn’t trust any bridge sign that I was within a foot of my height, I would come down to walking pace just in case.

Your joking aren’t you ? So you’re 13’9" but you would slow down to pedestrian speed for a 14’6" bridge ? Surely not .

Is there some analogy to be had there with your user name and trusting nature to heights ? - LOL
seriously though, running at 13’9 and a bridge at 14’6; if it was a busy trunk road with good surface then I would be quite happy, however if it was a B road with poor road surface, bit of a camber then I would probably be down to walking pace, and if it was an arch on a bend then may be stop get out and have a look.

+1.into crawler…open window…hang out window backwards with toes dangling on pedals, and watch like buggery all the way through…
On the other hand if my trailer is say 15’ 9" I would expect it to ■■■■ under a 15’ 9" bridge at full speed,
given the plus and minus tolerances for measuring both heights.

It’s just the embarrassment factor when it all goes pear shaped; Can you imagine that bloke in the low loader on the M20 having to phone into the office
Hey Boss, I have just clipped a bridge
Any Damage ?
To be honest the the digger and the truck seem ok.
Well why are you phoning in, just crack on.
hmmm, May be you should put the news channel on and check your insurance
Only the other day I encountered a 15’ 8" bridge without any advance warning sign.
I didn’t risk it of course but did cause a bit of chaos while I spun it round to find another way.
And there are several bridges I know of where centre arch is required to get through cleanly.

To be fair the alarm bells will probably start ringing when he says that the motorway bridge has taken out the dumper.
