Usual comments on here. No surprise that wages were so low for so long.
Too many wear working stupid hours as a badge of pride.
On so many levels it’s stupid

Are you a wagon driver or a crossing Lady?
Perfect example of the point I was making.

The point you were making is a load of ■■■■■■■■ though really isn’t it,if people want to bang hours in they may have a reason for doing so,debt, family, holidays e.t.c,each individual may have different personal situations…

It appears you can string a logical sentence together when provoked
Try it sooner, preferably without bone headed abuse.
With the average working week in this job being 55hrs this is why I do agency so I don’t have to do that. Sod 50+hr weeks, sod 12hr days. I’m quite happy being an agency plobber doing 8-10hr shifts and doing a 4 day week and thanks to decent hourly rates that’s all I need to do. Been so long since I’ve banged in an “average” shift that even 10hrs now feels like a long day.
One of the things that’s likely to come from the significant wage increases is more drivers realising they no longer need to bang in 60hrs a week to bring home a decent wage. Some companies are already starting to realise this as I’ve already seen a few adverts for lorry drivers, mainly Class 2, offering either full time or part time and one for Veola doing the skips at council household waste sites even offering “start times AM whenever you want”.
I think the big shift there’s been of drivers to agency hasn’t just been about the money, it’s been about drivers who have been on furlough and realised what they’ve been missing doing 12hr days deciding they don’t want to do those hours any more. With most permanent jobs requiring 50+hrs a week they’re deciding to go on agency because there’s so much work around they can work fewer days if they don’t want to bang in the hours.

That’s not wanting to bang in the hours, that’s HAVING to bang in the hours to pay the bills for being crap with their money and living a lifestyle they can’t afford using other peoples money which always ends up being more expensive. It’s interesting to see how many lorry drivers whine about having to bang in the hours because they need the money whilst smoking £4000 a year in cigarettes, the equivalent for many of 12hrs or more a week in take home pay.

It doesn’t really matter what people spend there money on though does it? If I want to smoke cigars and do coke off a hookers arse on a weekend that’s my business,if hours are there for the taking people may or may not choose to do them,I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again,I’ll never slate someone who wants to graft,it may take them time to find the right job or company but if your wanting to come into the industry wanting 40hrs a week your wasting your time,no planner, truck or delivery point is gunna get you it,nights or days…

It’s not about slating those who want to graft!
It’s more about those that want to graft well over the average slating those who want a quality of life outside work
When I did a bit of agency, some years back, was asked to turn up for a 05AM start . I was driving a battered 7.5 tonner delivering beds and flat packed furniture. Asked the gaffer when we would get finished, he thought it funny .Says how fast you drive determines that. Was done at 20.00 P.M. Other workers can go fishing or whatever else rocks their boat, but drivers work eat sleep and work again. Lorry driver shortage, young blood not coming in, whose fault is that then.
