100 mile commute

Mike, that’s not right. Your rest begins when you leave work, and ends when you arrive at work. I think (might be wrong) there was a proposal to count travel to work time as working time when the rules were drafted but it came to nothing.

Ok cheers for that

My new job i start monday is 96 miles each way  it only every 2-8 weeks tho so not really a big problem

I dont think travelling long distances is a problem if your away all week, or if its an international trip week in week out, but when you are given a 9 hour off thats when it will crucify you after youve had 6hrs rest to go back and do a 15 hr spread.

I think it was mentioned on here once that S&K have some driver(s) that commute from a long way away for several weeks’ tramping at a time. Fair enough if it’s for that but 100 miles round trip every day, no thanks… :exclamation:

I do 100 miles Sunday night, live away during the week, then back either Thursday or Friday afternoon.

Rhythm Thief:
I used to do 75 miles each way day in, day out when I worked in Wednesbury and lived in Monmouth.

I did similar daily mileage, though from Wellingborough to Dudley. This was back in the late 80’s, when I had a fully-expensed company car. I drew the line at daily commuting when I was transferred to Washington (Tyne & Wear), ending up in a rented flat 4 nights a week, home on Friday nights.

Nowadays, on those very rare occasions I get any work, I don’t want to be going to far, it just isn’t worth it on what agencies pay 7.5t drivers. :frowning:

CMIIW but does it not all boil down to the math involved in each individual circumstance?

Should I commute 100mls for £9ph, or should I take a job locally at £7.50ph?

I reckon it can only be an issue worthy of discussion if some tool out there is commuting 100mls for £7.50ph !

Personally, I wouldn’t want to spend more than half-an-hour each way as an absolute maximum. It’s bad enough having to drive all day without having to drive to work and back without getting paid. And having to buy your own car, fuel, road tax, insurance, tyres, test, etc.etc.

I wouldn’t have chosen such a long commute either. I worked at Wednesbury for a pretty good company when I lived in Wolverhampton, an eight mile bike ride away. Then my girlfriend got a job in Monmouth and paying two lots of rent made no sense, so we moved house and I started staying in the truck in the yard two or three nights a week, intending to get a better job when I could. Then the economy went to rat ■■■■, and my gaffer changed my shift pattern, so I couldn’t get a new job for love nor money and for a few months I found myself sharing a truck (so I couldn’t overnight in it any more) and commuting 150 miles a day in an elderly Volvo estate at maybe 30 to the gallon. :open_mouth: All in all, it was something of a relief to be given a tramping job.

I’ll do anything for the right money plus a car including fuel & all expenses…:grimacing:

This.

All
Boils down to tbe wages and how desperate you are for the work
If it the only job you can find to support your family take my hat off to you rather than go down easy route of benefits

If its the lure of big money going to cost you
A good £80 week plus devalue your car alot more with more miles
And wear and tear and more servicing
And as said if 15’s and 9 off you gonna be pretty much knackered end of each week

If was once a week for tramping or longer away then no problem
But everyday would get tedious afyer a while

did a 50 mile each way commute every day for seven or so years-however the firm supplied the fiesta/transit van(or take the lorry home when nearer) and the fuel.(best FIRM i’ve ever worked for…)
i left that place and ended up with a 40 odd mile each way commute in my own motor, but on £30 -40 quid a day more-BUT THE COMMUTE NEARLY KILLED ME!!..
my last place was a 25 mile each way trip but would take the lorry home as and when it suited me,(4 or 5 days a week ).( best BOSS i’ve worked for)…and i was there for nine yrs
at the moment i park 3 miles from my house-dreadful firm(good wages)but the short commute makes a big difference.i WOULD NOT commute any distance to work for this firm…!!

Simply put no I wouldn’t not a chance even if the wages were good enough the lack of time at home on a 9 hour wouldn’t make me even consider it.

Happy doing 40 miles a WEEK commuting :sunglasses:

Even if you’re not doing official nights out, can you sleep in the cab a couple of nights to reduce your travelling mileage? It’s something I’ve considered before.

140 mile round trip for me used to be 110 …but its only once a week as im tramping

got a mate on construction site travels back and forth every day got to be 50 miles and he gets a fuel allowance same as rest of guys on site nearly £80 a week cant see my boss doin that wont even give us tank of fuel at cost

I have a ‘sort of’ 230 mile commute, although my truck is parked on my front drive my terminal is in NYC, each load I deliver is out of there. Today for instance I have to depart my house at 6.00pm to head down the the city so that I can take a 10 hour break, then load and deliver to the top end of Vermont. I don’t get paid for the drive down, if I was to complain they would sure as hell take my truck away form the house and base it down there, 230 miles each way in my own car would be a no no.
I often bob tail each way at weekends.

50 to 70 daily round trip depending on job. 31mpg average, so not exactly over the moon with it. Will jump at something nearer as long as it covers my needs.
