What's a gearbox?

…like in a modern class 2 training vehicle?
Is there a clutch?
How many gearboxes are there?
Can you override the auto choice or is it fully auto?
Is it Park Reverse Neutral Drive?

Thanks in advance

Most LGV C training vehicles are auto
In most autos you do have the manual option
No clutch
Each auto can have a different set up in regards to the selection of Park Reverse Neutral Drive

There are many different manual and auto set ups so it is a case of asking how it works if unfamiliar with it

Is it Park Reverse Neutral Drive?

Generally yes. But ask the question before booking. Some trainers are still running manual gearboxes.

Take care, Pete S

Thanks all so far, it will be an auto, so does that mean most likely 8 forward gears? Is that 4 low ratio and 4 high ratio? or has that gone now? Is there just one reverse gear?
Ta!

Ta!

Auto means it will for 99% of the time sort itself out when in D (forward) so why do you need to know the amount of different gear ratios in the auto box

As ROG said, why worry? But, for information, many rigid vehicles are 6 speed auto whilst artics tend to be 12 speed.

Don’t worry about it though.

Good luck, Pete S

Speaking of random questions does anyone know of anywhere in the UK that trains on a road ranger gearbox the likes of which are used on the ozzy road trains? Apparently it’s a prerequisite for any work over there. Ever since my early 20,s living out in oz I’ve always dreamt of getting back out there and doing some mining

Just to clarify most trucks have automated manual boxes, they are not auto’s in the sense of an auto car gearbox. They still have a clutch but no pedal and the gear changes are automatically controlled.

I hope they’re better than those found in some cars! Shockingly poor!

Some auto boxes are torque-converter types, others use clutches. You’ll need to ask which one you’re dealing with (likely clutch).
