Unaccompanied Trailers

Hey,

I should like to hear some names of hauliers who send their trailers unaccompanied to Belgium in the '60’s and '70’s.
Like you had.

W.E. Reeve (Hammond)
Ferrymasters
Witbread
Halpin
And so on.

Eric,

I used to load the trailers of Cross Channel Ferries onto Belgian-bound boats in the mid-'80s so that company might have been working in the '70s.

And likewise I did a lot of Van Daele trailers from your end. Some of those were coilers and were very old 10m trailers.

Were V.A.L.E.X and Britlink (both Belgian) going in the '70s? I did dock traction with many of those.

And Trucking: that was a Belgian company that specialised in carpets. They sent unaccompanied trailers. Most of them had doors at both ends for easy access to long carpets.

Eric,

I used to drive the 1626s. I don’t remember the man, but most of the work I did for LASH was at the weekends so I met few drivers.

I used to ship over tristacks unaccompanied Folkestone Ostend, Ramsgate Ostend and occasionally Dover for LASH. I had to stack myself on a ramp in the yard at Norton near Sittingbourne.

Before Pitsea they ran out of Ford tractor plant the manager was ■■■■ Nicholas who later left and went to an outfit in Grays.Getting to Pitsea was not that good in the winter. Jim Saunders started on his own pulling containers he eventually packed it in and did something to do with sailing, eventually I believe he had a massive heart attack that finished him off.

I used to pull Halpin Continental trailers out of Dover, I quite enjoyed the job , but you had to re- rope and sheet everything. We did a lot of glass and Caterpillar stuff coming in, steel plate in packs from S Wales and bricks from the Stoke area going out.this was between 77-79.

In 60/70s I used to pull Bramms & Van Veen trailers out of Immingham, Deliver then reload them, I had to have a rear lighting board as their plugs were of a differant type plus I had converters for the air lines too,. Then when I became an owner driver I pulled trailers for Marsden Freight Services Ltd North Shields , Larry.

This load was a timber framed house, It took all day to tip at Lowick. The crane driver was a pain in the arse, But the rest of the lads were good & give me a hand to put the sheet in position etc. before they left, Larry.

Tip-top, I’ve had this film on video for years but it’s now on youtube so here’s the link:

youtube.com/watch?v=DlyX7h_SCQU

It’s one of my very favourite British Transport Films and it’s all about the early unaccompanied traffic between Tilbury and Antwerp. Make sure you watch the 2nd Part which has all the Belgian / European action in it!

Enjoy!
