He basically says companies should pay drivers better and not to rely on cheap labour from abroad.

“It’s a wake-up call and the industry needs to look to itself about how it’s allowed wages to get to the point that no one leaving school wants to do the job. It’s tragic to be in a senior position in an industry that I know deep in my heart people don’t want to be in,” he says.

Three pay rises in 9 months at my place…
But for us it was more about terms and conditions - they’re still struggling with that nugget

I think he’s right to why should our industry be subbed out to cheap foreign labour when we have every right to make a decent living. Just because we have to work 60 hours a week it is just the nature of the job doesn’t mean that we can be paid £10 an hour cos it adds up to a lot at the end of the week.
At my place we don’t have a single foreign driver, we have had a £3 an hour rise recently and we are on a 4 on 4 off pattern which is still weird to get used to.
We shouldn’t be asking for gold plated service stations just a decent wage that we all deserve. I also think they should take another look at the new hgv test because we are going to end up with a lot of idiots on the road who are going to give the rest of us a bad name

Sadly we have had lots of idiots for many years and I doubt if that situation will alter.

Yeah cause there aren’t already plenty of idiots driving C+E that probably shouldn’t have car licences let along HGV licences is there before the changes have been made. That already give us a bad name and lots of them should possibly know better.

Utter tripe viewpoint as usual that it automatically means new driver will be rubbish idiots.

Uh, if there are that many crap HGV drivers who did undergo the ‘‘proper’’ training imagine how many more and how much worse they’re going to be after only undergoing the half-arsed new training or maybe you will now say training does not have an influence on a driver’s ability

The test hasn’t changed. It’s just being tested differently by trainers instead of being included in the driving test. Let’s not let facts get in the way of making a point hey?

Speak for yourself matey

I wonder how many new drivers are only entering our profession because of the lurid headlines claiming earnings of £80k?
Most (not all) drivers became drivers because of a love of driving. You can tell the proper drivers on the roads. They are patient, courteous and respect the fellow driver.
How many of the new drivers chasing the dollar will have the driver values? I’d wager very few!
I have seen a rapid increase in bellends driving trucks in the last 5 years!

How can you say the test hasn’t changed?? There is no reversing manoeuvre exercise or coupling and uncoupling not to mention the fact someone can now go from a 1.0 litre car to a 44 tonne wagon with nothing in between, so yes I’d say that the standard of new drivers is going to change dramatically for the worse.
As for the other comment I think you’re bang on about them chasing the dollar rather than doing it for the love of driving. I took my test 19 years ago when I was 21 as that was what I wanted to do and still do as a career.
This will achieve more bums on seats but it’s also going to cause higher insurance premiums for companies to.

The test has not changed. Part of it is now taught and tested by the trainers and you still have to pass the reverse exercise. Before it was taught by the trainer and tested by an examiner by the DVSA as part of the test.

As for going from a car to artic it happened a long time ago that way.

So why don’t you tell me what has changed then in your eyes? Given you are arguing against the facts.

And if you really want to be pedantic the way it’s being tested has changed but I’d suggest you look into what those changes actually mean regarding the reverse exercise. As for whether someone can go from a certain vehicle to another type of vehicle is person specific. You have to be able to prove you are a competent driver to the examiner. None of that has any bearing of how someone will or won’t drive once out on the road.

He may be right though - a fairly important part of our job is the ability to reverse - I understand thats no longer part of an HGV test -go figure .

Not quite so.
As I understand it:
The reverse and coupling are still tested, but, they are tested apart from the road test. That can be done by an approved instructor, but not the student`s own instructor.
Road test is still a Ministry examiner.
It is meant to streamline the testing, I think. Once passed only the road part will need a resit if failed, not all of it.

So wages should be kept at £10 and just let drivers who want to do it for the love, continue?

I have seen a rapid increase in bellends driving trucks in the last 5 years!

So has nothing to do with the recent increase in wages nor the change in the test to separate the TESTING of reverse and un/coupling.

Everyone sees more bellends as the years go by - its called getting old.

Absolutely spot on. I’d say the increase in bellends is around 7 years to coincide with scrapping the manual gearbox on the tests. Trucks have gotten easier to drive over the years and I’d say far too easy to drive now thus allowing people who haven’t even got the skill to drive a car properly a far too easy path to driving a lorry.

So true…
If I ever get old I expect it`ll happen to me too.
