The only difference between a single manned journey and a multi-manned journey is that with a single manned journey you must have completed a daily rest period within 24 hours from the start of the shift, on a multi-manned journey you must have completed a daily rest period within 30 hours from the start of the shift.

As long as the second driver is not doing any work when the second driver is in the passenger seat with the driver card in slot 2 the first 45 minutes of POA counts as break.
Driving time and breaks are the same as for a single manned journey, the daily driving time is 9 hours and can be extended to 10 hours twice a week.

As above, just to add it is 21 hours overall, 9 off.

Not all double manning is maxing hours. Most of our work was in the 8 -10 hours driving range between 2 drivers because it was done for security. So an average day would be driving for 4-5 hours and an hour work, otherwise gasping out of the window/ snoozing/ scrolling through trucknet.

To clarify, when multi-manning your maximum shift time from start of work to end of work is 21 hours if you have a reduced daily rest period available, or 19 hours if you do not have a reduced daily rest period available.

The maxim driving time for each driver from the start to the end of the shift is 9 hours or 10 hours twice a week.

Double manned…

For a couple of years on Continental Express. There was a slight difference in pay for the lead driver but it was peanuts really. In real terms you should earn what you’d earn for a weeks worth of single man operation.

Not going into the hours questions.

You will have to find someone you can work with. It’s a very small place for two people to co-habit if you’re tramping. If the other guy drives likes a dork or drones on about politics all day, you’ll be jumping out the window by the afternoon. Be prepared for the worst sleeping pattern you can imagine too. Trying to get some sleepy go bye-bye’s when the lorry is being hoofed over roundabouts and launched away from traffic lights is an art.

double manning can be a good place to work, you do not have to do 4.5 hours, you can do 3 then change, its up to you and how long the journey is, most of the people I toured Europe with were competent drivers which would allow you to catch up on some sleep, if the scenery became a bit samey, most of our work was short term contracts so when boredom set in it was off to another country, or around great Britain if you had upset the boss, even some of the traffic jams in other countries were a pain ( especially big road works projects) but none as bad as running up and down the m6 or a12, our jobs were very seldom tight on hours so in all a leisurely paid trip around Europe with usually good company to eat meals with and view some wonderful places,
