Toulouse Tour de France?
EDIT: Nothing to do with Tour de France, Google “Glasgow to Toulouse cycle route”
I’ve often wondered myself what it is , I can remember driving past it when I was on a 7.5 tonner 30 years ago when it was the old rd
That dome shaped thing first appeared at the edge of Beattock village when the A74 was being
upgraded to motorway. I believe Toulouse may have been the main contractors for that section
but of course stand to be corrected. It has certainly stood the test of time, it must have been
put there in the late 1990’s.
the story that I know is that this sculpture was made by a local blacksmith and erected by the locals from Moffat and Beattock around Feb 1992 for a large group of cyclists that set off to cycle to Toulouse in aid of some good cause. at the time the A74M was not yet completed and the sculpture marks the starting point on the old A74.
