CPC question

Hi,

I have a class C licence which I obtained in 2005. I’m based abroad for most of the year and am struggling to get my CPC in. Is there any issue with not doing it until after the 14th (?) September deadline? I realise that after this date I won’t be able to drive until I’ve completed all five CPC modules but is that the only issuse?

Also, I was recently told that even if I got one or two modules in now these wouldn’t count unless I can do all five before the deadline. Is this correct?

Thanks all.

Its after the 9th, and you would have to wait until you recieve your driver card before you start driving again.

You say that you are Abroad,if you are in Europe then you cant drive commercially without the card. When you come back to the U.K. you would probably find a course provider without much trouble.

So I could do the five days, wait til my card comes through and then I’m fine?

I’m not in Europe and not driving for a living when abroad.

Yes you need all five before deadline day .

No. They would count.

This ^^

DCPC courses are valid for 5 years.

Example - for those with acquired/grandfather dcpc rights
7 hours done on 09/05/2010 = valid until 08/05/2015
7 hours done on 11/12/2011 = valid until 10/12/2016
7 hours done on 08/07/2013 = valid until 07/07/2018
After 09/09/2014 the drive cannot drive LGVs commercially
7 hours done on 11/10/2014 = valid until 10/10/2019
7 hours done on 12/12/2014 - at this point all the others are still valid so the 35 hours are complete and a DQC is issued with an expiry date of 11/12/2019

That driver now has until 11/12/2019 to get the next set of 35 hours if they wish to continue driving commercially after that date

If the driver did all that next set of 35 in the month of January 2015 then a DQC would be issued with an expiry date of 11/12/2024 but no more hours towards the next set of 35 would count until after 11/12/2019

I think I remember our trainer saying that if you haven’t completed the 35 hours by September, whatever you have completed is null and void and you’d have to start again. Anyone who knows confirm this? Or does it stay valid, you just don’t get your card till you have completed?

Originally it was as the dcpc trainer said but it changed soon afterwards as it was deemed illegal the original way by the EU

It now works as I stated in my post above

Read the three responses above?

It looks like I won’t be able to do any CPC stuff until my next visit to the UK (probably next year) so, if I understand it correctly, in 2015 I won’t be able to drive a class C1 or C until I’ve completed all five CPC modules and received my card? But I will keep the entitlement on my licence (that’s the main thing I’m worried about)?

The dcpc and the licence are two entirely separate issues

The licence allows LGVs to be driven

DCPC allows LGVs to be driven commercially

DCPC is not needed but the licence is for a LGV of any size when transporting horses privately for example

Sorry accidentally double posted while editing the post :unamused:

You said before “I’m based abroad for most of the year”, are you residing in a particular EU state for more than 185 days in each calendar year ?

If you are then you may be able to do the DCPC courses in the EU state that you’re currently resident in, but there’s no point in checking until we know if you do reside in another EU state for at-least 185 days each year.

Good point, I’ve no idea whether or not the address on the licence would be a game stopper, I haven’t looked into it that deeply to be honest.

I didn’t see the point until it was made clear whether or not it’s even relevant

I think if its a uk addy he needs at least 1 dcpc session taken in the UK for it to count

I live and work outside of the EU when not in the UK.

I was told I had to do CPC in my country of residence (which is the UK, for the purposes of this discussion) which is a shame as I have a mate in Ireland who’s a CPC trainer and could have given me a good deal. Ho-hum.
