Agency driver laugh of the week

So the other morning I’m just finishing my night shift when an agency driver collars me :

“'ere mate, are all these trucks the same?”
 “what do you mean?”
“the steering wheel, mate.”
 “what’s up with it?”
“are they all like this?”
“no, you adjust them to suit your driving position.”
“you can adjust them? I thought it felt a bit odd.”
 “you’ve not been driving it like that have you?”
“yeah I was in one yesterday, did 14 hours, they stitched me up good and proper.”
   “are you serious? You did 14 hours driving it with the steering wheel up like that?”
“yeah I didn’t know you could adjust them! No-one told me!”
“did you not think to ask someone?”
“…”

:unamused:   :unamused: :unamused:

Best laugh I’ve had for a while.

Was the massive lever on the column not a big clue for him

It’s a floor button on the Stralis, like the old exhaust brakes before they moved them on a stalk.

As a newbie, first time in a premium, I drove from hull to immingham like that, before inadvertently finding the button!!

I remember being at MFI when they got new wagons in. They’d been Scania for decades. Some of the drivers were asking the agency drivers how to drive them and do stuff like check the oil as they were DAFs and Mercs without dipsticks.

Only foreigners could come up with such a stupid siting for a steering wheel adjusting button, Renault especially.

Good job he didn’t need to top the oil up in a Stralis then…or is oil checking a thing of the past now, i see core full timers day after day jump into their lorries and fire 'em straight up so doubt the agency bods would be any different.

turn the ignition on mine goes through a complete check and gives you the oil level reading on the dash no need to tip the cab at all, but to be honest the past 2 trucks I have had both had dipsticks never needed any oil between inspections, always burned halfway down the stick and that was as far as they went, all trucks will burn oil off till they reach their own level. you could top them up everyday and they will still use it, so no point unless it gets to minimum mark :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

How do you top the oil up on a Stralis without tilting the cab then, buggered if i could find a top up point under the bonnet?

The three Stralis renters at the place i was at were always down to or below minimum whenever i got issued with them, the monkeys couldn’t be bothered but i can’t abuse a vehicle so always left down to me to top 'em up.

Unfortunately thats the standard of many professionals these days who think they are entitled to mega money for simply turning up.

We had 1 the other week almost pull the pin on a loaded trailer without winding down the legs and apply brake etc (1 of the lads told him just before he done it lol) and we had 1 a couple of days later reverse out of the warehouse in the 7.5t taking with him a tall pallet of various Chinese food lol mental

To be honest, I too realised it moved out for my fat belly from the stobart series! ! I was very new to driving Artics them days.

That reminds me, when i worked for a builders merchant a couple of years ago. The agency driver on shift that day, came over to me as i was busy loading and asked where the slot was to insert his digi card , it was a paper disc cassette type tacho. This chap was in his late 50’s early 60’s and definately not a newbie. made me chuckle anyway.

If nobody were to show you how would you know? lots of the buttons/levers are not that obvious.

How many of you have figured it out, and how many have been shown, an equal number I would bet.

No sympathy.

Agreed, can anyone top the clutch fluid reservoir being filled with screenwash?

The first time i ever jumped into a stralis, after about 10 mins of really trying my best to figure it out by myself, i swallowed my pride and asked someone how to get the ■■■■ in gear    never even entertained the buttons on the dash!!!

I don’t help them, you earn more than me so figure it out for yourself :exclamation: :exclamation:

See somebody fill the engine up to the top of the filler neck with oil. When about 1/2 mile before popped engine.

Years ago when I was an apprentice mechanic a bloke brought his dustcart to the workshop complaining he couldn’t get enough oil in to get it to the max mark on the dipstick. I lifted the front, took the filler cap off and put some oil in. His words? ‘Oh yeah, it’s probably quicker putting it in there than down the dip tube, isn’t it?’ :open_mouth:
