I had forgotten the controversy over his Mercury flight on 21 July 1961 and its calendar significance to the Apollo 11 moon landing, but sadly it did immediately strike home that along with Roger Chaffee and Edward White he had perished in the Apollo 1 launch pad fire in January 1967.
