Jobs are like Pensions: The “Defined Benefits” ones are the best, but not many of those around these days…

“Defined Contributions” ones - stink, but are commonly the ONLY type of job that seems to have some clause in it that makes it “unpleasant”.

Why oh why do people HAVE to work “floating shift patterns” rather than the family-friendly “fixed shifts” that would entice so many more people (back) into the workplace?

If you have a 4-shift fixed contract for instance, then you know that you’ll never be expected to work more than 15+15+15+13 hours per week to earn that headline “salary”.

Over 5 or 6 shifts though? - You’ll rarely be spending less than 60 hours a week at the workplace - eh?

“Any five from seven” means you won’t even know what you are doing from one week to the next, as even a strict “duty roster” is subject to changes, to accommodate sudden sickness, extra holidays being booked, etc.

“Fixed five” at least is better than that

Heath-wise too - It can’t be good for your long-term wellbeing if you keep switching from nights one week to days the next - and back again…
