Statins

Doctor wants me to start taking these as I’m apparently at risk of a heart attack / stroke in the next 5 years , cholesterol apparently , he did say the alternative is a healthy lifestyle plan , not sure what that could be as I already excersise , eat healthy due to diabetes
So anyone take statins , I’ve a appointment to see him but just wondered what it’s all about before lol get there , ta

Just take them, they are harmless, no side effects and can save your life, I take mine at night, it depends upon the type.

As Wheel Nut says - if the doc is advising to take them you probbaly should follow his advice.

Im in the same boat. But have been avoiding taking them as they can cause muscle pains. Going down the road of a healthier lifestyle - but it’s hardder than i thought.

Might just take the statins and hope for the best,

I take them, first lot I was given, gave me aching joints so stopped taking them .had a hospital app (unrelated) some time later and when asked if I was on any medication,I explained the situation. The nurse went mad at me ,and explained that I should inform my doctor . Doc have me a different brand and I’ve been ok since .

Thanks , there going to sort out metaformin first as 18 months apx & no review ( I moaned ) & then sort out statins

Off them as of today , can’t stay awake , pharmacist ( not sure why he’s involved ) said he’d never heard of tiredness as a side affect but to stop taking them and see how I go

Now got a blood test for livers apparently , to see whether to continue to take statins !! Informed them I stopped taking them a month ago , who told you to stop taking them , pharmacist, said she’d see doctor as he should be the only one telling me to stop taking them
Told to resume taking them & blood appointment early sept

Who told you a doctor is the only person who can tell you to stop taking them? The receptionist?
A pharmacist is as well qualified, if not better, than a doctor is, and a specialist in drugs. They can tell you to stop taking a drug, especially if a side effect of the drug is affecting you adversely.
However, you should have informed your doctor straight away, that you had stopped taking them and why. Different statins can then be tried until one that suits you is found.

Some useless trivia for ya. In general, a medical doctor has not done enough to earn the academic right to call themself Doctor. It’s a privilege granted to them by academia.
Doctor is an academic title granted to someone who has earned it by publishing a minimum number of ‘papers’ which have been peer reviewed and approved. This level takes several years more, after gaining a Masters degree, which takes a couple of years or more after gaining a Bachelors degree. A medical doctor hasn’t even gained a Bachelors degree, although they can do if they like. Same as you or I can. They do a 4 or 5 year training course, but a lot of that is hands on at hospitals, not academic, thank Thor. I’m not knocking medical Doctors btw.

Back on these things , apparently my cholesterol is ok , though they like it to be 10 & mine is 22 ( can’t find ref to cholesterol levels of 10/22 anywhere ? ) , but as a precaution she wants me on them as I’m at risk of stroke / heart attack
If you shook me I’d rattle with all the pills I take

Get on a keto diet

Why are you asking TN to explain this stuff rather than your GP?
Here, this might answer some of your questions, though there is no mention of “10” in any category being desirable.

Dozy, I would take 75 mg daily of Aspirin as it thins the blood to prevent a Transient Ischaemic Attack.

Gulp , a what attack , I’m not on statins , led to believe I was going back on them but on something to begin with e ( I’ll get name when I get home ) , helps with cholesterol apparently , but apparently all the side effects I’m getting with them arnt possible , yet daughter finds list online of side - effects attributable to these tablets / what I’m suffering from .
They just seem desperate to get me on something / stay on it whatever

TIA is a stroke and prevalent with lorry and bus drivers for a sedentary lifestyle or sitting down for too long.

I had terrible side affects with cholesterol pills, it felt like flu symptoms and the pain in the muscles, the doctor chopped and changed to one I have been using for years now with no symptoms and brilliant results but unfortunately the side affects are weight gain and my stomach acid medication also causes weight gain where exercise and diet doesn’t work.

Hmmm… Some minor corrections to an otherwise solid post
You’re 100% that the “Dr” title used after a medical degree is an honourary academic tradition, they aren’t “Doctors” in the true academic sense

A Doctor of Philosophy (aka PhD) is a true doctor, though you do not need to do a Masters first, I went from BSc to PhD. There’s no obligation to have published papers, but getting one or two under your belt makes the PhD award a bit more certain. You won’t be accepted onto a PhD unless you have a 2(i) Class or 1 Class degree, even if you undertake a Masters after scoring poorly on the undergraduate degree

Incidentally, the pass mark for exams to qualify as a medical doctor is just 40% :open_mouth:
An honours degree needs the follwing overall pass marks 2(ii) 50%, 2(i) 60%, a First 70%, a double first (pretty rare) 80%. Someone on a honours degree scoring an overall 40% would have been bumped off the course by their second year onto an Ordinary Degree

They’ve put me on these Henry , I thought they were statins until I read the instructions , doctor said there not statins but are for cholesterol

I take phenofibrates for the trygliceride levels and the statins.

As you can see, I have not had too many side affects apart from being told to brush my knashers more often so may go to Turkey and got those Turkey teeth all the celebrities seem to have but not as bad Rylan Clarke.

My Mrs bought me a new hair brush and I have worn the thing out already, probably a middle aisle item from Lidl or Aldi.

I have heard about this four K diet of Kimchi, Kefir, Kraut, and Kombucha for weight loss.
